Olympic hopeful and recent Ras stage winner David O' Loughlin (totalcycling.com/litespeed) recorded a fine solo victory yesterday in the Begijnendijk race in Belgium, a warm-up event for the GP Claude Criquelion (UCI 1.6) today.
O' Loughlin escaped from an 8-man breakaway group including regional champion Wim Van Huffel with 20km to go and won by over a minute, keeping his name to the fore in the minds of Olympic squad selectors.
Martin Munroe finished 8th and Mark Nestor 9th in the Zaventem Sterrebeck junior race which was won by world junior cyclo-cross champion Albert Neils.
Tomorrow, O'Loughlin leads a Team Ireland squad of Tommy Evans, Sean Lacey, Tim Cassidy, Paidi O' Brien and Andrew McQuaid in Deux Acren. Meanwhile Nicolas Roche finished in the main field in the first stage of the Tour d'eur et Loir and soon-to-be professional, Philip Deignan continues to ride solidly in the U/23 Baby Giro in Italy
