MOORE WINS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Stamullen M.Donnelly’s Bill Moore has shown some impressive form whilst competing in South Africa recently. Last weekend Moore won stage 4b of the Tour of Eden. One of South Africa’s biggest stage races, the five-day Tour of Eden is split into three separate stage races for professionals/elite, 30-39 year olds and veterans (40plus).

Moore rode in the 30-39 yrs stage race which saw almost double the entries for the pro/elite race and also saw the wining time in the time trial, run over the same course, beat the pro winning time by almost half a minute! With 18 mountains to be tackled, involving over 5 hours of climbing, the race is not one for the faint hearted.

After a 4.5km prologue in the morning, the race’s first stage saw Moore and a teammate involved in a three man chase of a solo breakaway on the ascent of the first category Bloukrans mountain. With 5kms to go the lone leader was reeled in and Moore and teammate Marco Van Biljloen took it in turns to attack the breakaway with the South African taking the stage ahead of the Stamullen man.

The 150kms second stage saw a category 1 climb just before half way and began with Moore and his team keeping a steady pace on the hills out of Knysna, through the wilderness and into George.

After the first Cat 3 climb and hot spot sprint, the category 1 climb of the Outeniqua pass beckoned. With the wind picking a group of 30 stayed together until the last kilometer. At that point Alasdair Garnett took the KOM, with Moore in close proximity in the leading nine riders. On the following mountain top finish Garnett outsprinted Moore for the stage win but the Irishman took consolation in points leader’s jersey.

Stage 3 saw Moore and his David George Motors team regain the yellow jersey for Biljoen. The next day, on the 110kms stage to Mossel Bay, Moore attacked with 250 metres to go on the kilometer long hilltop finish and stayed away to claim the stage win and top off a fantastic week.
