Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership is delighted to announce the hosting of
the An Post Tour of Sligo on Sunday 10th May 2009. This is a
wonderful opportunity to encourage increased leisure cycling while also
promoting Sligo as a cycling destination for visitors. This cycling event is all
about:
Participation, Fun
and Sporting Challenge
Background……
The An Post Tour of Sligo came about following the
selection of Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership to be part of a series of
five national community cycling events. Support from An Post as main sponsor and
the Irish Sports Council at national level has been critical to ensuring the
hosting of the event. It is modelled on the very successful Sean Kelly Tour of
Waterford and similar events will also take place throughout the summer in Clare,
Meath, Cork and Waterford. The event has great potential to promote and
develop cycling in County Sligo and the North West region, while also marketing
Sligo as a cycling destination. It has been made possible through the positive
co-operation between local agencies including Sligo Sport and Recreation
Partnership, Sligo County Council, Sligo VEC, Sligo Borough Council and Failte
Ireland.
The commitment of local cycling clubs, Innisfree Wheelers
and Eire Og Cycling Club has been outstanding while local support through
sponsorship from Super Valu and Connacht Gold will add to the quality of the
event. The collective effort of all involved will greatly enhance the planning
and delivery of what promises to be an exciting and memorable sporting occasion
for Sligo in 2009.
The event will involve 3 different routes and will
hopefully accommodate a wide range of cycling interests, including the leisure
cyclist, family cycling and of course seasoned/ experienced cyclists.
