WOMEN'S COMMISSION PRESENT STRATEGIC PLAN: (By Elsa Connaughton May 16) The women's commission of Cycling Ireland unveiled their strategic plans for the next couple of years at the AGM held in Athlone last weekend. Keeping in line with the strategic objectives of Cycling Ireland they committed themselves to developing the underage scene and the positive portrayal of the sport among the young and impressionable. Conscious of the limited resource pool from which they have to work, with many of the volunteers and commission members hailing from last years successful women's league, they have welcomed the offer of help and advice.

Top of the agenda is their dedication to the development of the All-Cables women's league into a provincial/National league. It has proved itself to be a tremendous source of recruitment and as a means to re-introducing women to the sport. With the women's National Championships fast approaching all eyes will be on the start line for an increase in numbers.

It is clear that while this newly-formed commission may be lacking a bit of broad experience, they certainly make up for in enthusiasm.

WOMEN RIDE WELL OVERSEAS: (By Elsa Connaughton May 14) The women's commission sent a development team off to compete at the 3rd race of the team road racing series held in Denbigh, North Wales last weekend. The team comprised Louise Moriarty, Gillian McDarby, Marica Attorresi, Roisin Kennedy and Valerie Considine. A total of 41 riders set off from race headquarters on a sunny morning for six laps of the undulating 9 mile circuit, with three primes each lap on laps 2,3,4 and 5.

Louise MoriartyLouise Moriarty was part of the early action which saw her claiming the third prime on the second lap of the circuit. Gillian McDarby rode very hard making several moves which had the bunch strung out and weaker riders being shelled out at the back. Louise was able to come through again and take the sprint for the 2nd prime on lap three. Despite being caught in a pile up Louise carried on to finish in the bunch along with Roisin Kennedy who rode a fantastic race.

The winning move came on the fourth lap when Jackie White (Rourke Cycles) went off the front only to be joined by Charlotte Goldsmith (SP systems) and stayed away to the finish. Tired after all her work, Gillian McDarby pulled out on the fourth lap. Valerie Considine and Marica Attorressi rode well to limit their losses after losing contact after lap 2, and finished just a couple of minutes down.
