David O'Loughlin

O’LOUGHLIN TAKES UNDER 23 TITLE: (Shane Stokes Aug 28) Seventy-two miles may have passed beneath narrow-section tyres before the respite of the chequered flag, but in essence yesterday’s under 23 national championships was settled in two defining moments. First, an early breakaway consigned highly-tipped Mark Scanlon to a supporting role, his crucial pre-race warmup made impossible by car problems on the way to Newry. Second, a decisive lone attack by David O’Loughlin with seven miles remaining caused a break-down of a different sort for his three remaining breakaway companions. Crossing the line over a minute clear, the performance served to illustrate just why O’Loughlin is seen as one of the brightest prospects for Irish cycling.
Of the current batch of young riders, only new professional signing Scanlon is rated higher than O’Loughlin, but he was left stranded just miles into the opening lap. O’Loughlin, Paul Healion, Shane Prendergast, John Bann-Lavery, Brian Ahern and Barry Mullin surged clear to open a sizeable lead, and despite their best efforts neither Scanlon nor any other rider could close the gap. Mullen soon slipped back under the pressure up front; a cramping Brian Ahern was also jettisoned, although the DCU-supported rider did not suffer the same fate until the closing stages. That left four up front; O’Loughlin’s efforts soon reduced that to two, before Paul Healion finally succumbed to the 22 year old’s pace. Game over.
Afterwards, a satisfied O’Loughlin was forthright about threat posed by the 1998 junior world champion. ‘Our group went early, and once Scanlon wasn’t in it we all worked really hard to stay away from him.  We knew if he was in the split he’d probably win the sprint, so we just put the heads down and rode.’  In contrast to the style of his victory, both the women’s and veteran’s titles went down to the cut and thrust of a sprint. In the former event, three times national champion Susan O’Mara jumped for the line slightly earlier than she wished, and was passed by French- based Geraldine Gill with metres to go. Lorraine Manning held off Michelle Crinnion for bronze. Then, in a similar finish in the over-40’s race, Norman Campbell proved faster than Con Shortt and Paddy Power in the dash for the flag.

Kieran Page Wins Junior Tour

PAGE WINS JUNIOR TOUR IN STYLE: (Shane Stokes Aug 14) Kieran Page yesterday became only the third rider to lead the Junior Tour from start to finish. The English 17 year old, who won Tuesday’s opening 4 km time trial up Howth Head, finally ended the 259 mile race with a 4 second advantage over Holland’s Freek Folle, with Folle’s team-mate Norbert Poels third and Tim Cassidy best of the Irish in fourth place.
As expected, Saturday’s 57.2 mile mountainous stage in Roundwood proved one of the most decisive of the event, loosening the stranglehold the Great Britain team had on the race. Frenchman Mickael Sarkissian went clear in a group towards the finish and held on to become the first non-GB rider to win a stage. Meanwhile, back in the field Kieran Page faltered slightly on the ascent of the Sally Gap and by the finish had conceeded two seconds of his six second advantage to Folle.   But that was as close as the Dutchman got. Yesterday’s stage was largely a bunch affair, with any breakaway attempts being snaffled up before the finish in Blessington. On this occasion, normal service was resumed and the dominant Great Britain team took their fifth win in six stages. James Bell outsprinted the Ireland Stena Line trio of Colin Armstrong, Michael Dennehy and Tim Cassidy to the line, leaving Dennehy’s mountains jersey and Cassidy’s 4th place overall as consolation for those in the green jerseys.  And Page? Two stage wins and the overall classification bring his tally this season to over 50 victories, and place him alongside Aidan Duff and Mark Scanlon as the only riders to lead from start to finish. He is chasing another record of Scanlon, by the way; emulating the Sligoman by taking a junior world title is foremost on the talented youngster’s list of priorities. Being a junior (under 18) again next year, he has every chance of doing just that.

RE-RUNNING OF HISTORIC CYCLE RACE: (Jim Trainer August 2) A two-day cycle race from Belfast to Dublin and back, commemorating the first ever multi-stage race held in Ireland, will be held on the weekend of September 2/3 .  In 1950 the Belfast to Dublin single day race, which had been running since 1947, was made into a two day event by adding a return leg and so became the first multi-stage cycle race in Ireland. This ground breaking event sparked a rask of imitations in the following years and only four years later in 1954 there were two week-long races being promoted, the Tour of Ireland and the Ras Tailteann.  <Read More Here>

KENNEALLY SECOND IN WORLD-RANKED HAVANT GRAND PRIX: (Aug 6) Piltown cyclist Brian Kenneally made a successful return to the Irish team today when he placed second in the world-ranked Havant Grand Prix in Portsmouth. The FBD Milk Ras stage winner attacked after 65 of the 110 miles had elapsed and accompanied by Englishman Mark Lovatt, established a clear lead over the chasers. However, with Lovatt’s team mate John Tanner attempting to bridge the gap Kenneally was left to do all the pace-setting at the front, as Lovatt refused to contribute to the work. It meant that the finish was a foregone conclusion; Lovatt darted clear in the run-in to the finish, with Kenneally crossing the line 4 seconds later, but two and a half minutes ahead of a frustrated Tanner.  Eugene Moriarty was next best of the Irish in 10th place. Paddy Moriarty was 13th and Stephen O’Sullivan 21st.
