O'LOUGHLIN 8TH IN PURSUIT, QUALIFIES FOR SECOND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT

David O’Loughlin earned a place in the points race at next month’s world track championships in Palma, Majorca, by riding solidly in the World Cup held in Manchester over the weekend.

O’Loughlin was second in his heat of the points race and then finished twelfth in the finals, doing enough to qualify for the worlds. He already secured a place to ride the individual pursuit there and on Friday he was a good eighth in the event. The Mayo rider was however disappointed not to go faster, recording 4 minutes 30.12 seconds and thus falling outside his national record set back in September. He had been doing times of 4 minutes 25 seconds in training last week.

“We are not sure what is the reason for the difference,” said Cycling Ireland’s Frank Campbell today. “It could be down to the warmup or perhaps it is something else. We are trying to work it out.”

UCD student Louise Moriarty beat the women’s national mark for the 3,000 metre pursuit, setting a time of 3 minutes 56.194 seconds en route to 19th place. This was almost five full seconds quicker than the 4 minutes 1.095 set by Siobhan Jacobs in Manchester on the 14th of March, 2004.

Three other Irish riders were also taking part in the World Cup, making it the first team entry in many years. Ciarán Power was 16th in his heat of the scratch race, thus missing out on a place in the final. He joined up with O’Loughlin, Dermot Nally and Paul Healion for the team pursuit, where the quartet placed 14th.

O’Loughlin will line out in two events at the world championships at the end of March. Dermot Nally may also be taking part. O’Loughlin, Nally and the three other riders who competed at the weekend had the chance to build experience, as did the coaching and management staff. Cycling Ireland is hoping that this will lead on to some good results in the longer term.
