IRISH IN ACTION IN LOS ANGELES WORLD CUP

David O’Loughlin finished a good eighth out of 23 starters in the individual pursuit competition at the Los Angeles World Cup over the weekend, furthering his aim of building his world ranking in order to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Jenning Huizenga (Netherlands) was the quickest qualifier, posting a time of 4 minutes 25.04 seconds. O’Loughlin covered the distance in 4 minutes 31.01 seconds, leaving him 3.3 seconds away from a time that would have qualified him for the semi-finals. Taylor Phinney (Team Slipstream) eventually took the gold medal, beating quickest qualifier Jenning Huizenga (Netherlands) by over two seconds.

O’Loughlin’s time was almost five seconds slower than that which he posted while placing seventh in the previous world cup round in Beijing. However Los Angeles is known as being one of the slower tracks on the international circuit, making comparisons very difficult.

The Pezula rider will move up the world rankings as a result of his ride. He will aim to further progress in next month’s final World Cup round in Ballerup, Denmark, and the World Championships in Manchester at the end of March. He estimates that a place in the top seven of the world rankings should be enough for him to gain Olympic qualification.

O’Loughlin competed in the scratch race yesterday, beating 15 riders to win one of the three heats. However he finished back in 22nd place in the final, with world champion Kam Po Wong (Hong Kong) coming out on top.

Two other Irish riders were in action on the first two days. On Friday Morgan Fox was twelfth in the second heat of the points race, missing out on a place in the final. Cameron Meyer (Toshiba) came out best there, overcoming Rafal Ratajczyk (Poland) and double FBD Rás champion Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk).

Also on Friday, Louise Moriarty finished 15th in the third heat of the women’s scratch race. Charlotte Becker (Germany) went on to beat Evgeniya Romanyuta and her Russian Federation team-mate Elena Tchalykh in the final.

Yesterday Moriarty narrowly missed out on making the final of the women’s points race. She finished tenth in heat two, with the first eight from each heat going through to that evening’s contest. Jarmila Machacova (Czech Republic) beat Min Hye Lee (Hong Kong, China) and Li Yan (People's Republic of China) in the final.

Fox competed in the kilometre time trial, clocking at time of 1 minute 8.52 seconds for 17th place. Australian rider Scott Sunderland (Team Toshiba) was quickest in 1 minute 2.7 seconds.
