IRISH BROTHERS RIDE MELBOURNE WORLD CUP

Australia-based Irishmen Timothy and Simon Llewellyn were in action from Friday to Sunday in the second round of cycling’s Track World Cup in Melbourne.

Timothy was twelfth in heat two of the points race on Friday, but finished outside the qualification placings. That evening, Cameron Meyer (Australia) pipped Ioannis Tamouridis (Greece) and Lukasz Bujko (Poland) in the final.

Also on Friday, Jesse Sergent (New Zealand) won the individual pursuit, beating Rohan Dennis (Australia) in the final. Simon Llewellyn was thirteenth.

He finished in the same position in heat two of the scratch race yesterday, while Thomas Scully (New Zealand) went on to triumph in the final.

The competition came to an end today with a number of events. The two brothers rode in the men’s madision, but were non-finishers. New Zealand (Marc Ryan/Scully Thomas) and Germany (Robert Bengsch/Kalz Marcel) took gold and silver.

The participation of the two gave an important Irish presence at the three-day event, helping to satisfy the requirement that Ireland attends a certain number of World Cup contests.

Last year, the Irish squad lost out on the chance to ride the team pursuit at the world championships as it had not entered the necessary number of events.

The next round of the World Cup will be held in Cali in Columbia, running from December 10th to 12th.

18/11/09 IRISH TRACK TEAM IN MELBOURNE (by Liam Ruth)

Following the Irish team’s recent participation at the Manchester Track Cycling World Cup the next round sees Melbourne, Australia, takes centre stage and again Ireland will be represented. This time the Irish jersey will be worn by riders born in Australia but proud to be wearing the green of their adopted country. Both riders are members of the Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club in Sydney, a club with a strong fraternal relationship with Slaney Cycling Club, Enniscorthy.

Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club has developed and unleashed its latest weapon for Ireland - the Llewellyn Brothers - who will ride for Ireland at the upcoming UCI Track Cycling World Cub on 19th to 21st November in Melbourne Australia. Locally produced, Tim and Simon Llewellyn are connected to the Emerald Isle through their mother and recently were naturalised, and qualified for sole representation of the Irish cycling team for the upcoming event.

It’s fitting for the brothers to represent at the international level, with some great rides this year on the track and the road. Firstly, through the hard work of Simon, Club Track Captain, he has mustered a dream renaissance in track cycling at Dulwich Hill, and, together with his own race finishes, steered the Club to win the Sydney based winter long Track Series at Dunc Gray Veledrome where the Sydney Olympics were held.

Brother Tim, venturing into road racing for the first time, managed to snare a 5th place in the 120km Coota Classic Race, finishing with the professional Drapac team.

Ireland's hopes to make the London Olympics is also dependent on regular participation and results at the various UCI World events - and you can be sure that Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club's most devoted track riders are working to keep that dream alive.

And the Irish Connection doesn't end here. Geoff Martin, Club President, wishes Simon and Tim Llewellyn well, at the club's local venue at the Canterbury Veledrome. Geoff, who rode for 5 weeks with Slaney Cycling Club in 2005, when visiting with Enniscorthy born partner Therese, took out Irish citizenship several months later. Geoff is not only excited by the elite level international representation from the club, but is also looking, as is Simon and Tim, for their newly adoptive country to strike success.
