Says Shane Foran GCC safety officer. The cyclists are focussed on collisions between cars and cyclists but the issues raised apply to other collisions. A comparison of UK and Irish design guidance has thrown up concerns regarding longstanding Irish practice. <Read More Here>

Re: Irish Times declines to print rebuttal of anti-cyclist article

Hi Peter / and IrishCycling.com readers

In a recent opinion piece Mary Holland of the Irish times has a go at cyclists
Who knows what rules apply to cyclists?
http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/opinion/2001/0426/opt1.htm
I requested right of reply in a rebuttal to her article but my request was declined and I was told to submit a letter instead.  However, it appears it will not be printed in letter format either so I am passing it on to you, it may be of interest among the wider cycling community.  Regards - Shane Foran

HELMETS COULD BE MADE COMPULSORY:
Cyclist unease over controversial IMO helmet proposals:
(By Shane Foran, Galway Cycling Campaign Apr 23) Irish and international cycling advocates are involved in a last minute lobbying effort to the Irish Medical Organisation in advance of the IMO's AGM which starts today. The cyclists have been galvanised into action by a controversial motion at which calls for government legislation to force cyclists to wear helmets. "This has come as a complete shock to us" said Shane Foran of the Galway Cycling Campaign. "Compulsory helmet laws have been highly controversial and widely discredited where ever they have been tried. Both the British Medical Association and the European Cyclists Federation have rejected such measures on the grounds that they are effectively self-defeating. In Australia the main effect of helmet laws ten years ago was to discourage cycling, with an average drop of 35% in the number of cyclists. Even today in Western Australia the number of cyclists is still 5-20% below the pre-law level despite an increase in the overall population." <Read More Here>
