FOOT & MOUTH: - LATEST ON EXPERT GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Mr Joe Walsh TD, announced that the Expert Group which has been reviewing on an ongoing basis the controls and advice already in place had met again today and had issued further interim guidelines (copy attached).

In this context, Minister Walsh re-iterated the critical importance of full compliance, particularly on the part of the farming community and those living and working in rural areas, with the recommended disinfection procedures. "It is also vital, all the moreso now that a case of FMD has been confirmed in this jurisdiction, that farmers regularly examine their livestock and report to their District Veterinary Office anything of concern in this regard.

As the Expert Group has pointed out, the possibility of airborne transmission of FMD from Britain requires that farmers along the East Coast be particularly vigilant", the Minister said. The Expert Group will meet again tomorrow to continue its ongoing review of controls, etc. in the light of evolving circumstances.

Minister Walsh added that sporting, cultural, etc. organisations should consider whether, the Expert Group's guidelines notwithstanding, they should in any event postpone scheduled events in the light of today's developments. All categories, particularly those in the front-line in rural areas, should redouble their efforts to prevent the spread of the disease, by continuing to obey the advice given by the Department in relation to precautions such as the continued renewal of disinfection measures. 22 March 2001 <Read EXPERT GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS Here>
