TOUR OF THE SPERRINS: (By Jim Trainor Jun 24) Belfast professional David McCann (CCC-Mat), home to defend his Irish title in next Sunday's Phoenix CC promotion at Dundrod, showed he is in good form when he won Harps CC Cookstown's 100 kms Tour of the Sperrins, finishing on his own 1.18 ahead. McCann attacked from 10 miles out after a 6-man chasing group which included himself, Denis Easton (Maryland Whs.), Brendan Doherty ProVision), Conor Murphy (McKenna Fireplaces, Emyvale) Simon Devlin (Phoenix CC) and Mary Lyttle (Roadstars Crumlin) had caught a 14-man break whiich had been away all day. This group, which included Saturday's winner Keith Gallagher, Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC), Conor Murphy (McKenna Fireplaces, Emyvale), Greg Swinard (Usher IRC) and Joe Fenlon (Dan Morrissey) had gone just after the start and at one time were 1.40 ahead. On the main climb of the day as the leading group was reduced to 10, the McCann sextet went in in pursuit but it was only with 10 miles to go that they finally caught the leaders on the final climb in time for McCann to launch his successful attack. With two miles remaining Philip Duignam (Four Masters) and Brendan Doherty left the chasers and stayed clear to take the next two places with Gallagher leading in the remainder of the break 10 seconds later.  <See Pictures Here>

ON th next circuit 15 riders went in pursuit ant at one stage 30 seconds covered the whole field.  However when the front two groups merged the bunch quickly lost time and entering the sixth lap they were 1.30 down. At the front four riders: Stephen Hanna (Banbridge CC), Greg Swinard (Usher IRC), Brian Ahern (Classic Walls) and David McDonald (Bell Orwell) held a 15 second lead and at the bell these four were stil outin front but in pursuit were Gallagher, David Peelo (Usher IRC) and Brian Lenon (St. Tiernans).

They caught the leaders and on the final climb out of Scarva Hanna dropped back leaving six to contest the sprint.. 27 seconds later Owen Jeffries (Northern Dave Kane) led in the chasers.  In the B race over five laps (100 kms) junior Ryan Patton (Classic Walls) got away with veteran Aidan McKeown (Phoenix CC) Ryan winning the sprint 33 seconds ahead of the bunch led in by Eddie Smyth (Ards CC). <See Pictures Here>

1st John McCormack Memorial: (By John Moran Jun 16): The vets and ladies had a handicap of 3.5 minutes on the main field of Senior riders. There was constant attacking for the first few miles before a front group formed containing Brian Lennon (St Tiernans), Andrew Donnellan (Dub Whlrs), Paul Healion (Usher - IRC) and a few others. On the road between Batterstown and the Green Sheds a fierce cross head wind split the bunch into many small groups, but the bunch came back together just starting the drag through Culmullin. Over Culmullin Hill and Mullagh they still had a lead of 20 seconds, to a chasing trio of Anto Moran and Graham Thomas (Ravens) and Colm Bracken (Usher-IRC) but a hard chase by the bunch on the road back to Batterstown ensured that everyone was recaptured, leaving the Vets up in front by 1.5 minutes.

There were numerous attempts to go clear until passing the Green sheds for the third time about 20 men managed to emerge from the bunch, to catch the Vets group on the hill. After the hill the main protagonists emerged - Simon Whelan, Paul Healion, Karl Donnelly, Dave Peelo, Brian Lennon and Keelan O'Connor. Anto Moran and a few other almost got across but couldn't manage to close the gap. The break was closely followed by a group of twelve men, including Joe McGill (Ravens), Stuart Gibson (Bell Orwell), Adrian Hedderman (Cycleways) and the remnants of the Vets group, with the bunch struggling about 45 secs behind.

On the fast run in from the Hatchet Inn the front 6 managed to keep their advantage and Whelan, Healion and Lennon got a gap on the other 3 coming into the finish, with Whelan running out an easy winner in the sprint.

The organisers, Richie and Bernie McCormack would like to thanks all the marshalls who helped to ensure a smooth running of the event, as well as the St John's Ambulance crew who thankfully weren't needed. Next year it is hoped to expand the race, maybe into a 2 day.

Problems with Phoenix Park Races: (June 5) Race organiser Alice Sherratt has said that the Phoenix Park races will not be going ahead until further notice.  All Park races have been stopped due to outbreak of the Foot & Mouth and because of the condition of the road surface on the main road.  Since the restrictions have been lifted Alice had agreed a new circuit around the Kyber pass with the park authorities.

At a subsequent meeting this week the park people outlined what requirements they wanted in place on the new circuit.  This included a lot of marshals and safety barriers, plus they requested that traffic would need to get in and out of the hospital which was on the circuit. Alice would not be able to guarantee all requirements imposed on their race organisation, she is now looking for an alternative venue.  Details will be posted here as soon as they are finalised.

Geraldine Gill 1st and 2nd in 2 days racing: (June 4) On Sunday in Breic de Lodet, France in a 3.9km lap by 15 times road race.
