Tour de France July 1st-23rd<Official Tour Site
Lance Armstrong of America retained his Tour de France crown as the epic race finished on the Champs Elysees before massed crowds in Paris. The 21st and final stage, a 138km ride around Paris, went to Stefano Zanini, who won a mass sprint for the line in 3:12:36 to edge out Eric Zabel. 'It's a great day, a wonderful feeling' said Mapei's Zanini, 31, after his stage triumph, the first of his career. Armstrong, who defied doubters after recovering from cancer, headed off nearest challenger and 1997 winner Jan Ullrich of Germany by 6:02.
Lance Armstrong emulated fellow American Greg LeMond in winning the Tour twice in succession and will try to win it for the third time next year. 'I'll be back next year, I can promise you that' Armstrong said. Festina's Joseba Beloki of Spain placed third overall on his Tour debut, 10:04 adrift of Armstrong. Elsewhere Santiago Botero was crowned King of the Mountains, while Germany's Telekom rider Erik Zabel was similarly honoured with a record fifth straight green jersey. Paul Healion

Healion takes Newbridge Credit Union GP: (Shane Stokes July 23) Dubliner Paul Healion provided further proof of his current good form, in advance of next month's European Under 23 championships, when he won yesterday's Newbridge Credit Union GP. Healion was part of a five man Usher IRC group who hauled in lone leader Stephen O'Sullivan early in the race, and was the only rider who answered O'Sullivan's surge at the top of the climb on the fifth lap. Despite strong sidewinds buffeting them on the Curragh, the two riders opened up a lead over a chasing group. At the finish of the 60 mile race, current national criterium champion Healion jumped clear within sight of the line to eke out a ten second winning margin over O'Sullivan, with Colm Bracken leading home a trio of riders to take third. Brian Lennon, who won Saturday night's Balivor GP, finished a tired fifth after a broken gear cable meant he was stuck in the 12 sprocket for most of the race.
Elsewhere, the Cidona Carrick team pulled off a rare clean sweep when they took the first three places in the Caherconlish road race in Limerick. First home was Adrian Hedderman, 5 seconds clear of FBD Milk Ras stage winner Brian Kenneally, with Martin O'Loughlin third.  Further north, Roger Aiken of the Banbridge club overhauled Ireland junior team cyclist John Lacey on the final stage to win the Ras Dun Na Gall event.

O'LOUGHLIN'S GOOD FORM CONTINUES: (July 16) Having finished 4th in the recent Irish road race championships, Italian-based David O'Loughlin's run of good results continued in a major Italian race. The 22-year-old, who is racing this season with the Zalf Fior team, finished an excellent 9th in the U-23 World Cup race at Bassano Montegrappa, which ended with a 25km climb. O'Loughlin's performance is a major confidence boost for the Mayo cyclist, who has high hopes for the forthcoming European C'ships in Poland on August 3. He will dispute both the road race and the time trial with the Irish team.

David McQuaid rode the Alberto Tronca Memorial (150km) last Sunday. He was part of a select break from the start but crashed heavily on a descent after 60 miles after a very bad rain shower. The full extent of his injuries, while not serious is not yet known. Unfortunately his brand new Federation Trek bore the brunt of the fall.

DUFF FINDS FORM IN FRANCE: (July 16) After a knee injury led to his withdrawal from the FBD Milk Ras in May, Dundrum cyclist Aidan Duff has posted signs he has regained top form. The Nantes 44 rider won a stage in the recent Tours of Dordogne and Deux Sevres, and retained the yellow jersey until the race ended two days later. He was tipped for professionalism three years ago by Stephen Roche, but dispite finishing 8th in the U-23 Paris Roubaix classic he failed to make the step up His good form this season, however, has given the 24-year-old confidence that he will be vying for a contract with a professional team later this year.

Michael McNena wins Mayo GP

MCNENA TAKES MAYO GRAND PRIX:
(By Shane Stokes July 16) Italian based Michael McNena was the clear winner of yesterday's Mayo Grand Prix, crossing the line 15 seconds clear of Banteer rider Richie Cahill and FBD Milk Ras stage winner Stephen O'Sullivan.  McNena, who is competing this season with the Sintofarm team finished second behind Brian Kenneally in Saturday's Castlebar criterium, but went one better yesterday to underline his current good form.  Philip Duignan reaffirmed his status as one of the favourites for next weekend's Dongeal 3 day by winning the Ulster Hill Climb championships.
