GIRO D'ITALIA 2000

Ciaran Power in the Giro D'Italia

GARZELLI WINS GIRO D'ITALIA Stefano Garzelli of Italy, with the Mercatone Uno team, has won the Giro d'Italia. He finished ahead of another Italian Francesco Casagrande Garzelli had taken the pink jersey Saturday from Casagrande during a 34km timetrial Casagrande had seemed to have the race won until Saturday's slump. The 21st and final stage was won by Mariano Piccoli of Italy - it was the 29-year-old Lampre rider's third stage victory in the Giro. It was the first major Tour victory for Garzelli whose previous biggest triumph was on the 1998 Tour of Switzerland a year after turning professional.

POWER FINISHES TOUR OF ITALY Ciaran Power became only the seventh Irish cyclist to complete one of cycling's three Grand Tours when he finished the three week Tour of Italy. The Linda McCartney team rider crossed the line in the main bunch today just seconds behind stage winner Mariano Piccoli. Power finished 122nd overall. Power had two high stage placings in the tour - placed 5th on the 3rd stage and 6th on last Tuesday's leg to Meda. The 24-year-old has virtually guaranteed a place on the two-man Irish team for the Olympic road race in September and has surely done enough to retain his pro license for next year.

Stage 20 Italy's Stefano Garzelli, of the Mercatone Uno team, took the leader's pink jersey in the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) on the penultimate day of the race. Garzelli took the lead from compatriot Francesco Casagrande after the 20th stage - a 34km time-trial - which was won by the Czech Republic's Jan Hruska, riding for Vitalicio. Ireland's Cairan Power finished comfortably within the 25% time quota required and will now finish the Giro - his first major professional tour.
Stage 19 Italian Paolo Lanfrachi won the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia sfter a battle in the mountains that signalled the return Marco Pantani. Another Italian, Francesco Casagrande, stayed cool under fire to keep the overall lead after 176 kilometres over two grinding mountain passes He seemed unperturbed by the fight around him as his rivals climbed two mountains over 2,000 metres which shook out contenders like Wladimir Belli Pantani, out of sorts for most of the Giro, showed flashes of the talent that took him to his Giro and Tour de France wins two years ago.
Stage 18 With just three stages remaining in the Tour of Italy, Ireland's Ciaran Power is recovering from his toughest day yet in this three week race. The tiring Power, found the going tough on yesterday's mountainous 18th stage. Battling against the threat of missing the time limit, he finished 125th and now lies 123rd overall, behind race leader Francesco Casagrande of Italy. Casagrande struggled on the final climb to Pratonevoso, and while he finished in the same time as stage winner Stefano Garzelli, he conceded 8 seconds due to a bonus in the sprint finish.
STAGE 17 Spain's Alvaro Gonzalez won the 236-km 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia today. Czech Jan Svorada was second and Russian Dmitri Konyshev third. Italian Francesco Casagrande retained the overall lead.
STAGE 16 Ireland's Ciaran Power finished sixth in today's 16th stage of the Tour of Italy. The 102km stage from Brescia to Meda was won by Italian Fabrizio Guidi of the Francaise des Jeux team. Guidi also beat out Holland's Steven De Jongh and Italy's Biaigo Conte in a mass sprint but Italy's Francesco Casagrande, of the Vini Caldirola team, retains the pink jersey by 33 seconds. Italy's Marco Zanetti took fourth place ahead of compatriot Moreno Di Biase and Power of the Linda McCartney team, who recorded his top ten finish in the Giro - his first ever major stage race.  Shane Stokes Reports >>
STAGE 15
Spain's Angel Vicioso of the Kelme team was stripped of his win in the 15th stage of the Tour of Italy when marshals decided his sprint was illegal Second place Biagio Conte was awarded the stage victory following the sprint finish at the end of a stretch between Bormio and Brescia. Italy's Francesco Casagrande of the Vini Caldirola team retained the overall leader's pink jersey during this 180km stage. Organizers believed Vicioso's sprint interfered with Silvio Martinelllo about 150m from the line.
STAGE 14 (Shane Stokes May 28) Ciaran Power rode steadily on one of the toughest mountain stages of the Tour of Italy today, to finish 108th, 26 minutes and 3 seconds behind stage winner Gilberto Simoni. Power is currently 134th overall with one week remaining in the race, and the first year professional looks increasingly likely to succeed in his aim of finishing his first major tour.

STAGE 13 Spain's Jose Luis Rubiera, of the Kelme team, won today's 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia in the Dolomite Mountains Italy's Francesco Casagrande of the Vini Caldirola team retains the leader's pink jersey.

POWER STARTS TOUR OF ITALY (May 11) After seven years without an Irish rider in one of cycling's three major Tours, Waterford's Ciaran Power gives the sport a massive boost tomorrow when he starts the three week Tour of Italy.  The 24-year-old is part of a nine man Linda Cartney squad, based in Toulouse, and which has aspirations of competing  in next year's Tour de France.   Power has impressed so far this year by placing highly in stages of the Tirreno-Adriatico and Settimana Ciclista Internaziole races.  The race begins with a 6km time trial in the Vatican City and finishes 21 days and over 3,700km later in Milan on June 4.
