Leinster League Race 3

 By Cian Lynch

Clonee - Saturday 28th April 2001

To become known as the Sean Bracken Saturday outing, the handicap race was going to be nothing short of a training ride for those of us unfortunate enough not to be either classed as juniors or vets. The gaps were only horrendous,,, what with the 'B' riders only being caught at about 4 miles to go, and not a chance of us catching the others. This is despite the fact that scratch averaged 26.5 miles an hour.

The scene at the start was more relaxed than normal. As we stand there in the pissings of rain .. waiting for the starting orders. Rolling out after the start was unreal - there has never been such a lack of interest in commencing racing … but for Finn O' Sullivan starting to drive it up the road, things would have been very very quiet all day. As Crowley put it towards the end, make sure we thank the race organizers for the race, and for our training ride. All we did all day was ride up and over, indeed some got so pissed off with sitting on that they didn't even continue to ride all the way round.

For my part, I was happy enough insofar as I made sure I rode through as much as possible. The only was to bring on a bit of badly needed race form. After the finish, I spun in the road with Gary McQuaid, who is busy in his studies, one of many racing at the moment. The rest of us were ready to indulge in David Duffieldum for the afternoon, whilst catching the Amstel Gold on Eurosport.

And that's it. That's how uneventful and disillusioning the race was. Give the rest of us a chance for God's sake…….
