KEARNEY CYCLES CONNACHT MOUNTAIN BIKE LEAGUE 09. R2

start of the senior's in the Kearney Cycles Connacht Mountain Bike League 2009 Round 2

Knockranny Woods on the edge of Westport was the venue for a very exciting Kearney Cycles Connacht Mountain Bike League Round 2 held in ideal weather, the underfoot conditions were a little muddy but this added to the challenge on a very testing and tricky circuit set by Padraic Marrey Western Lakes and Tom Moran Covey Wheelers Westport C.C and the helping hands of many.

This circuit took its toll with 6 cyclists of over 40 entrants calling it a day after a few laps but in the expert race the first to suffer from the rough conditions was Anthony Testa, Westcoast Wheelers in the expert section, breaking a chain on lap 3, but Sadhbh Baxter Westcoast Wheelers to the rescue, taking the chain off her bike giving to her team mate and then completing her last lap running, and Anthony having lost 4 mins and not one to give up, started on his quest to catch Padraic Marrey who was averaging 11.55 per lap, Anthony got the time down to 1min with a lap to go and then Marrey had a mishap, his Derailleur went in the middle of his spokes, so he had to take up his bike and run, and only lost 3 mins to Testa, mountain biking is great you can do a bit of everything!!!!.

The Sports section threw up a few surprises, Ronan O’Flynn unattached, put league leader Garry Collins Western Lakes under a lot of pressure taking this round by over 4 mins, this puts it up to Collins to respond in the next round in Durroura, Co.Galway on Nov 22nd, and Joe Carroll Galway Bay finished in third.

In the Vets section Jan Gieglis Unattached, put in a great performance with a lap average of 12.04 to take first place, from Danny Maloney Covey Wheelers, Westport C.C, who put in some great work to hold off league leader Padraic Conway, Covey Wheelers Westport CC.

The Novice section was also very competitive, Fergal Treacy Unattached Had a 1 min lead over Colin O’Grady at the finish with Rory Brennan, Covey Wheelers Westport C.C in third. Brendan Scullion Western Lakes silver medal winner in the MTB National Championships showed his prowess in taking the under 16 group from Gavin Burke Innishfree C.C and Ryan Scott Covey Wheelers Westport C.C taking a well deserved third.

start of the youth in the Kearney Cycles Connacht Mountain Bike League 2009 Round 2

Frank Finnerty Western Lakes was best of the under 14 section with the ever improving Philip Comerford U/A in second, Mark Biggins Western Lakes finished third. Ciaran Needham Covey Wheelers Westport C.C, recorded another win at under 12 in only his second outing, Mark Finnerty Western Lakes finishing in second place only 5 sec down, from Matthew O’Donnell, Covey Wheelers Westport CC. David Needham Covey Wheelers in his first race had a good win holding off Declan Maloney Covey Wheelers Westport C.C. in the under 10 age group. Michael Sheridan Covey Wheelers Westport C.C was a very strong under 8 and had a good time beating some of the older competitors.
