National Bike Week 14 - 21 June 2009

To celebrate the first ever “Bike Week” in Westmeath, the following are some of the events that are being planned:

• Bike Health Checks
• Sunday, 14th June at 6pm - Mullingar Cycle Hub (Canal towpath Section) - “Fun Cycle” - assemble at Mullingar Railway Station.
• Monday 15th June at 7pm - underage Fun Cycle at Tudenham, Lough Ennell, Mullingar - assemble at Tudenham
• Wednesday 17th June - Cycle Safe Roadshow in Castlepollard
• Wednesday 17th June - All-Ireland “Bike to Work” Day.
• Wednesday 17th June - “Town Centre Cycle Race”, hosted by the Lakeside Wheelers - Invitational Event
• Thursday 18th June - Cycle Safe Roadshow in Kilbeggan
• “Win a Bike” Competitions during National Bike Week.

Free Bike Health Checks. (All week) - Free Bike Health checks will be available from Bike shops throughout the County. For details of a Bike shop near you please contact Westmeath Sports Partnership on 044-9390208

Fun Cycle - Sunday, 14th June at 6pm:

On Sunday evening 14th of June at 6.00pm there will be a Fun Cycle along the Canal towpath starting from Mullingar Railway Station.

Participants should arrive at the Public Car Park at the Railway Bridge and Fire Station from 5.30pm onwards. Participants who take part in the event and register their name will be put into a draw to win the top prize of a bike worth up to €500. There will also be free bike health checks provided on the evening as well as cycling safety tips and advice from members of the Lakeside Wheelers Club.

Underage Fun Cycle - Monday 15th June at 7.00pm:

On Monday evening 15th of June at 7.00pm there will be an Underage Fun Cycle at Tudenham, Lough Ennell. Participants should arrive at the public car park from 6.30pm onwards. Participants who take part in the event and register their
name will be put into a draw to win the top prize of a bike worth up to €500. There will also be free bike health checks provided on the evening as well as cycling safety tips and advice from members of the Lakeside Wheelers Club.

Bike to Work Day - Wednesday 17th June:

All employers are encouraged to promote the Bike to Work day among their staf. To make a social occasion of the event we would encourage that all members of staf who partake could avail of a light breakfast (tea, cofee) on arrival to work from 9.00am to 9.15am. If participants would like to register to win a bike worth up to €500 please supply a photo of you and your colleagues biking to work along with your contact details and e-mail it to us at info@westmeathsports.ie. Please remember if you are biking to work to bike safely and always wear a helmet.

Cyclesafe Roadshow Castlepollard - Wednesday 17th June:

On Wednesday 17th at 11.00am the Cyclesafe Tutors will be in Castlepollard town square. Children from the local schools will be given a demonstration of cycling safety tips and a free bike health checks for their own bikes.


Town Centre Cycle Race (Criterium) - Wednesday 17th June

The Mullingar Town Centre Cycle Race will commence with a “Novice Race “ starting at approx 7.45pm. This will last for 30mins plus 1 lap. Participants will be by invitation only and it is proposed to have spot prizes every 2 laps. A sprint inish will decide these prizes. The “Senior Race “ will also be an invitational event and will commence at approx 8.00/8.15pm. The race will last for 1 hour plus a lap with spot prizes every 2 laps again decided by a sprint inish. The event will run along the route as per the map included and there are numerous vantage points for spectators. Westmeath Examiner is also sponsoring a prize for “best picture” at the event. There will be an expected 60 to 70 cyclists in each event and many will be local so please come out, lend your support and cheer them on.


- PARKING RESTRICTION - ROAD CLOSURES AND PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL APPLY DURING THE RACE -

Cyclesafe Roadshow – Thursday 18th June:

On Thursday 18th at 11.00am the Cyclesafe Tutors will be in Kilbeggan town square. Children from the local schools will be given a demonstration of cycling safety tips and a free bike health checks for their own bikes.


EVENT COMMITTEE

In Westmeath, an organising committee has been established which includes representatives from the Westmeath Local Authorities, Westmeath Sports Partnership, The Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club, Mullingar, Shannonside Cycling Club Athlone, Failte Ireland and Co. Westmeath Tourism Limited. This committee and the events have been supplemented by the co-operation of An Garda Síochána, the Civil Defence, the Mullingar Chamber of Commerce and Westmeath County Council.
