Fifty leisure cyclists and support crew are planning to cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head, a total of 680 kilometres in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB). This is an annual event to raise €50,000 for the charity. In this, our 5th year, the Health Service Executive is our Title Sponsor. Dubliner Cheese are Associate Sponsors. Lahinch Golf and Leisure Hotel are sponsoring our 2nd Stage. All funds raised go directly to IGDB.

Shirley O’Shea, Health Promotion Manager with the HSE stressed, “from the point of view of fitness & health, cycling is a great activity for improving the body’s engine, the heart and lungs, especially if the gym is not for you. We’re delighted to be promote a great health message and support such a worthy charity with this tour!”

Trained guide dogs begin working at 2 years of age and retire at 10 years old. It costs approximately €35,000 to support a Guide Dog from pup to retirement, covering all costs from vet fees, dog food, training etc…

The Group is meeting up in Bantry on Saturday May 27th 2006 and the tour starts from Mizen Head the following morning. Each cyclist has to raise €1250 or more to partake in the event. We have three visually impaired cyclists taking part on Tandem Bikes and one of them is our team bike mechanic, Pat!

Stage 1 - Start in Mizen Head and cycle to Killarney via Bantry, Glengariff, Kenmare

Stage 2 - Cycle from Killarney to Lahinch via Listowel, Tarbert, Kilrush

Stage 3 – Cycle from Lahinch to Galway via Clarecastle, Ennis, Gort, and Kinvara

Stage 4 - Cycle from Galway to Sligo via Headford, Claremorris, Westport, Castlebar, Swinford and Moylough

Stage 5 - Cycle from Sligo to Letterkenny via Ballyshannon, Donegal Town and Ballybofey

Stage 6 - Cycle from Letterkenny up to Malin Head!, via Faha, Buncrana, Drunfree and Carndonagh

Your support and the support of each cyclist’s extended family, work colleagues, friends and neighbours is much appreciated. Without this goodwill this event would not be the success it has become.
