Cycling Ireland, has teamed up with Best Buddies Ireland, to hold a charity cycle that will help raise valuable funds for the charity that promotes one to one friendships for people with intellectual disabilities.

Tamara O'Driscoll, CEO of Cycling Ireland, interviewed by Gay Byrne

Best Buddies Challenge Ireland, is a 90mile cycle starting at the Phoenix Park on Sunday June 18, 2006 and hopes to attract a minimum of 500 riders. The route will head out to Co. Meath as far as Athboy before turning around and heading back through Summerhill and finishing at the Phoenix Park.

The Best Buddies Challenge is based on its American counterpart, Best Buddies International which was founded by Anthony Kennedy-Shriver, daughter of Eunice Shriver and nephew of President Kennedy himself.

Tamara O’Driscoll, CEO Cycling Ireland said: “Following on from the success of the Special Olympics, which Eunice was so heavily involved in and of course the affection the Kennedy family has for Ireland as a country, its no surprise that they choose Ireland as the place for the first ever Best Buddies Challenge outside of the United States.”

Long time cyclist Gay Byrne
“We’re confident it will be a great event and are looking to attract as many cyclists to participate as possible.”

For people who are daunted at the prospect of a 90mile route there is also a shorter 25mile circuit available. The idea is to encourage people to get involved and give it a go while helping to raise money at the same time. Cyclists will be expected to raise sponsorship for the event, all of which will go towards Best Buddies Charity. Even Eunice Shriver has committed to cycling in an offer that is sure to drum up interest.

During the day, spectators will also be treated to a number of celebrity criterium races which will take place in the park as soon as the last of the cyclists have left. Members of the public are being invited to turn up on their bikes and join the celebrities as they warm up for the series of races.
