Hundreds of cyclists are expected to converge in Dublin city for a unique new event which aims to attract 3,000 people of all ages to cycle 10 kilometres from three different suburban locations across the capital.

The inaugural ‘Tri-A-Cycle’ event is being organised to take place on Sunday, September 13th by Cycling Ireland in conjunction with the Olympic Council of Ireland to give families an opportunity to enjoy cycling in the city.

The organisers have devised three 10 kilometre routes from locations in the North, West and South of Dublin which will take cyclists to Irishtown Stadium where an open-air event involving music, food entertainers, work-shops and other cycling related activities will greet those crossing the finish line.

“The event is being organised to encourage people to take up cycling as a leisure activity and also as a sport. Cycling is one of the greenest and cheapest forms of exercise that families can enjoy and its health benefits are often overlooked,” explained Geoff Liffey, Chief Executive of Cycling Ireland.

Starting points have been selected in Dun Laoghaire, Bull Island and Kilmainham and the Gardai will escort riders on all three routes to organise rolling closures of roads and junctions. Experienced cyclists will accompany each group as marshals and they will also be supported by the emergency services.

“We have already started to contact schools, youth and community organisations and cycling clubs throughout Dublin to encourage them to participate in the event. Anyone over 8 years of age can turn up on the day, there is no entry fee and each group will cycle at a leisurely pace to the finish in Irishtown,” Geoff added.

Cyclists are invited to take their place on the starting lines at the seafront car park on Windsor Terrace in Dun Laoghaire, at Causeway Road at Bull Island and at the Modern Art Museum in Kilmainham at 10.30 a.m. on the day. Each cycle will start at 11 a.m. sharp and will arrive at Irishtown Stadium just over an hour later.

“The event has been devised to help leisure cyclists and those who are interested in trying their hand at bicycle racing to get the most out of the sport,” Geoff explained.

“Some of Ireland’s top coaches and cyclists will host workshops at the open-air event in Irishtown Stadium and they will provide information on fitness and safety as well as advice on bike set up, positioning and maintenance. Even the most experienced cyclist will find something to benefit them,” he said.

“The expert presenters will also provide dietary and training tips and will be available to answer questions. Participants and visitors can also learn how to join local cycling clubs and what they can do if they are interested in participating in races and leisure cycles,” Geoff continued.

10 Kilometre route from Bull Island: Causeway Road – Clontarf – Alfie Byrne Road – East Wall – East Link Bridge – Irishtown.
