Hi IrishCycling.com,
I'm also an Irish cycling fan and having read the letters re David McCann, I feel I must reply I can understand David McCann's frustration and all is not right within Irish Cycling but I'll leave the response to his letter to others or even Cycling Ireland (if you ever get one that is)
It's the letter from Gerald Francis that disappoints me and his attack on Dan Martin. So he should not be selected because "he neither lives or races in Ireland". Based on that criteria, that rules Nicolas Roche out as well so, Although both do come over to race here when they can i.e. Stephen Roche GP, Irish National Champ., Tour of Ireland etc They could ignore these and remain in France.
As a non-Irish national living in Ireland that Gerald states he is, I am disappointed in his attitude to Dan.
I'm 100% Irish, living in Ireland and proud of guys like Dan (and Nicolas).

Hi IrishCycling.com,
As an ardent follower of Irish Cycling I have read with interest your article on the non selection of David McCann. I cannot but fully agree with the David feels as I have always had a problem with the way cycling is run in Ireland. Without getting personal I would just like to highlight a few things which in my humble opinion seems absolutely wrong.
Firstly Phillip Deignan and Nicolas Roche were sent to the
Olympics, Deignan had no results of note to warrant a selection and in the process DNF Nicolas as least finished.
As we all know Nicolas has just finished an excellent Vuelta and warrants selection for the worlds. Needless to say Phillip Deignan has no results of note once again. Dan Martin is selected to race in the U23 race and as we all know, he neither lives or races in Ireland even though I am aware that he has an Irish passport.
David McCann at least rides a good few Irish races and I'm sure would have worn the Irish jersey with pride. Stephen O'Sullivan rode the domestic season out of skin and although some would argue that he is not world class he also would have at least given 100% if picked on an Irish team.
Is is just a forgone conclusion that if you ride for a pro team irrespective of results you get to go to exotic destinations to represent Ireland? The mere fact that David was not given any indication as to what he needed to to get selected will tell you that something is gravely wrong within Irish Cycling.
I would just like to add that I am not Irish and don't know any of the riders personally but as someone who has lived in Ireland for a long time and loves cycling,I just felt obliged to point out what i think are the facts.
