Barrow Wheelers Sporting 100km

Many thanks to all at IrishCycling.com for the inclusion of the BW Sporting 100km in the Irish Calendar and the What's On Soon section. I'm delighted to report that over 140 turned up on a very cold Sunday morning.

After observing a minutes silence following the tragic death of Slaney CC member John Wickham the large group left the Geraldine O'Hanrahans GAA club house at 10.15, efficiently led out by a group of back up vehicles including 6 motorcycle outriders.

The route initially followed the N25 to Waterford and then onto the N9 Waterford - Kilkenny road, now devoid of significant traffic since the opening of the M9 motorway. By this stage the sun had broken through and the temperature was rising as was the pace now heading towards an average of 32kmh as those who had been putting in long hours over the winter were keen to push the pace.
The route continued through villages of Mullinavat, Ballyhale and Knocktopher before going cross country to Bennettsbridge to join the R700 for the return leg to New Ross.

Thomastown was next up and then the picturesque village of Inistioge. The leading bunch picked up the pace once again on the long drag out of Inistioge as a number dropped off the back. The first group arrived back at the club house in just under 3 hours.

The refreshments were appreciated as people compared winter training stories (most untrue) and looked forward to the season ahead.

Many thanks to all who made the effort to attend especially those who travelled considerable distances.
