RAS MUMHAN 4 DAY IN JEOPARDY

Press Statement: Date: 16th June 2006
Issued by: Sean O’Callaghan

Following a successful six years of promoting Ras Mumhan, I have, with deep regret, decided that I will not be promoting the event in 2007. Despite the opportunity of promoting the race with the advent of a new sponsor, which would have enabled me to develop the race to an even higher level, I am forced to make this decision due to the very poor climate that currently exists within the administrative side of the sport in Munster. This undemocratic development within Cycling Munster, which has been ongoing since last November, has resulted in the concerted attempt to sabotage the democratic structures in place since 1997 (when Provincial Structures replaced the Regional Boards). Its consequence is the attempt to remove the Board of Cycling Munster of the democratically elected Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and two Vice Presidents and has now forced me into this course of action. The people affected which I have mentioned namely, Cathy Mansfield, Peter Thornton, Michael Twomey and Liam Leahy have all served cycling at Club, Regional, Provincial and National level for many years in a very honourable fashion. The fact that there are concerted attempts to dishonour these people and their positive contribution to cycling, is deeply regrettable and shameful on the part of the perpetrators.

Three of these aforementioned people, Cathy Mansfield, Peter Thornton and Michael Twomey are also members of the Ras Mumhan Organising team. They have been of major assistance to me in organising, running and developing this event for the past six years to the highest possible standards and in making the 4 day international event a major success. I am saddened to see how these individuals, who have provided so much to the sport of Cycling for many years, can be treated in this shameful manner, and the fact that others, in high office have allowed them to be treated in this way is an indictment of the poor administration of the sport nationally. The damage to the morale and the very deep hurt that has been meted out to these individuals is incalculable. It discourages me from being involved in the promotion of the sport that I love, for the foreseeable future.

I would like to thank Killorglin Credit Union who have been the main sponsor for Ras Mumhan for the past six years. I would like to express my gratitude to, the many volunteers who freely gave of their time, the members of Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club, the Riders, Team officials, Race Officials, Motorbike Marshalls, Press, Gardai, Stage End Organisers, Cycling Munster, Cycling Ireland, Irish Ferries, Go Ireland, Splash Designs and Western Union. Finally, may I express my sincere thanks to my close team, Eileen Scully, Cathy Mansfield, Mick Twomey and Peter Thornton for their commitment, honesty, professionalism and support over the past six years.

Sean O’Callaghan
Race Director
