Dear Editor
I read your website all the time.. although I have zero experience with road racing, I do have a general interest, however I just feel that Tommy Campbell's reports are a bit on the negative /hysterical side.
I suppose most of the road scene are into hearing about Miceal Concannon's latest comment.. but who can replace him as President.. and thats really the crux of it...
Why is he the President... why is Jack Watson still there... I guess I'm an accidental Cyclist... my only participation is in off-road events.. I wouldn't know where to start to get involved in road racing... though I have huge respect for it.. but it scares me.. I reckon I'd punch somebody on the start line..
Anyways.. us off-road cyclists have our own problems.. but I love bikes.. I mean what they can do... what they open up for us... whether its off-road or on road... we get further than normal people.. and the speed... we all love the speed..
Stephen Roche is long gone.. get over him.. whats wrong now is we have too much choice... and our expectations are way too high..
Sean Kelly... now... hes the Rocky of World Cycling.. I'd love to see him at the World MTB XC Champs or even the Olympics... I would put money on it.. that between you and I we could turn him into a savage MTB'er..
Anyway.. from where I'm standing I love the sport.. I love watching Irish riders on the TV..whether they are on the road or off-road..
The ERA of Kelly and Roche is long over and we should stop beating our up and coming riders with the memories of them..
When I think of Sean Kelly i think of the Nissan Classic and the Glen of Atherlow in the rain.. and when I think of Stephen Roche.. its of Galtee Cheese..
Sorry.. but what do i know,
Richie Byrne
