Stage 2 was a new stage for the 3 day with a first time finish on top of Croghan mountain. The women went off at 10am with the men’s race 15 minutes later. In the women’s race leader Marine Lenehan had to be on her toes as Annalise Murphy wasn’t making it easy for her with constant attacking. Marine was equal to the task. In the means race Connor Dooney of Foyle CC who started at 2.23 behind yellow jersey Conor Murphy of Caldwell. A group of 3 quickly formed and powered on putting 1 minute into the main field. The lady’s bunch were moving as the handicap was holding at 7 minutes for long parts of the first stage.

Eventually two more riders bridged across to the leaders, that contained Ryan Oatfield of Hallsowen CC UK. As the started the last lap in Kilanerin the men’s leaders had cut the deficit to the women’s race to 2 minutes. However the main field hadn’t reacted and allowed the leaders a time gap of 2.30 meaning the Dooney was now yellow on the road. The race turned in Coolgreany for Ballyfad and quickly started the 4km climb to the finish line. The leaders of the men’s race caught the women’s race and split the women’s bunch. However, Marine was equal to the challenge from the men and put the hammer down and no one could go with her. She powered to the finish line taking an historic win as the first female winner of a stage in the ‘Gorey’ a very popular win followed by Ryan Oatfield in second and Annalise in 3rd place.

The big winner was Conor Dooney takes yellow by 7 seconds from Murphy with the TT to come. Lenehan strengthen her grip on the pink jersey with the TT also to go.
