Over 40 cyclists will take part in the annual Pat Casey Memorial Cycle on 21 September. The event, now in its eighth year, is to raise funds for research into idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a rare lung condition.

The charity event in memory of Crosshaven man Pat Casey (55), who passed away from IPF in 2013, has now raised over €66,000.

The 122km cycle will leave Cork City Ford Centre, Forge Hill at 9.30am before heading to Innishannon, Bandon, Ballinascarty, Timoleague and Garretstown and returning to Forge Hill via Kinsale.

First organised by Pat to raise funds for the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA) and Cork University Hospital’s (CUH) respiratory unit, Pat’s wife, Anne; son, Daniel; brother, Martin; and friend Brian Aherne have since continued to run the annual event in his memory.

Speaking ahead of the cycle, Anne said: “Pat’s passing has left a huge gap in our lives. However, this annual cycle means so much to us as it keeps his spirit alive. From the cyclists, to the support, to the fantastic Cork City Ford Centre, it is truly inspiring to see everyone come together to remember Pat year after year.”

Brian added: “There has been an incredible response once again from local businesses coming out to support this cycle. I would like to thank all those companies, along those who continue to volunteer or support this charity event in any way they can. This cycle is always a great occasion and is open to all — so consider joining us on 21 September for a cycle that will make a difference.”

The registration fee is €30, and those wishing to take part can contact Brian at 086 0881064, Anne at 087-9854587 or email annecasey@live.ie. Registration will also be open on the morning of the cycle between 8.15am-9.15am at Cork City Ford Centre, Forge Hill, Airport Road.
