Greg Swinand of the Usher Irish Road Club racked up his first win of the season in convincing fashion after three hours plus of intense racing today in the Carlow/Laois area. The Des Hanlon Memorial event sponsored by Dan Morrissey attracted 126 first and second category competitors who were in the thick of the action from the drop of the flag,

But it was nine brave souls who set the tone of the racing for the day and in the end it was five of those who headed into the final kilometers for outright victory in the 30th edition of the event. It was Greg who showed a clean air of wheels to his former team mate Peter Hawkins who is now based in Belgium for the number one spot. Sean Lacey of the Edge CC in Cork was third on the same time as Hawkins. Last years' winner Adam Armstrong of EuroCycles CC made a heroic effort to catch the leaders on the final lap along with Colin Robinson of Stamullen/M. Donnelly RC.

They were over three minutes in arrears, but the finishing line came that bit sooner and they finished over a minute in arrears of the five leaders. Last weeks winner of the Newbridge Credit Union Grand Prix Edward Barry of the Blarney club in Cork finished eight and considering he is a newcomer to cycling, the future augurs well for him and the Blarney club who only re-appeared on the scene after an absence of a number of years.

CONNACHT LEAGUE ROUND 1

Derek Joyce of Galway Bay held off the challenge of his group for the win in the first round of the Mayo League. Swinford CC's Donal Harrington was second with Padraig Marrey of Western Lakes the fastest ahead of former Junior Tour winner, Simon Coughlan of Donamon CC.

The handicapper was caught off side yesterday with the limit group taking full advantage of the allocated time to their group. They took the extra advantage on the start line in Tuam, Co. Galway and never looked back, Sixty went to post for a circuit which took in three counties over a distance of 46 miles. Admittedly, conditions were dry, but the wind played into the hands of those who were in the limit group and the first four were those winning by over a minute plus. The two most promising cyclists in the province finished fifth ad sixth.
