He's back! Brian Kenneally landed the biggie yesterday when he ouftfoxed his break away companion, Paul Griffin from Tralee to take the honours in the Des Hanlon Memorial organised by Carlow CC and sponsored as usual by the Dan Morrissey organisation. According to race organiser Ray McKenna a record turnout of over two hundred competitors were in town for the three events organised by the club.

Whilst the Piltown competitor was happy to break his duck for the season and the new sponsor Engrave.ie were over the moon with the success.

The 'Hanlon' is indeed a classic and it was all go throughout the 145kms of racing held mainly in Co. Carlow, but it also tipped into Co. Kilkenny.

Going out on the final circuit a group of eight had taken over the reins of leaders on the road with the bunch more or less resigned to a saunter around the course because the leaders had established a lead of three minutes.

But the experience of Kenneally and Griffin a former professional with the Giant Asia Team made one last throw of the dice and forged ahead. A the toughest point on the course at the 'Ridge' the duo merged with the lead group. Eventually they dropped them and at the finish it was Kenneally who took the trophy and the honours of the day in the sprint.

Last weeks one two three of the first classic of the season "Ras Luimni" Neil Delahaye of the Usher Irish Road Club finished the day off in sixth place with Paul Healion of South Dublin CC and EuroBaby EuroCycles Sean Lacey in eight place. All three will be action over the Easter period in the Kerry Group Ras Mumhan and the PO Tour of the North.
