Is there anybody in Cycling Ireland? Duff causes ripples in running circles! Ireland not listed for the Olympic games.
Just picked up one of the many mails that land on my desk every week. This one is from a concerned club official who is still scratching his head! Concerned would be the operative saying. He is dumbfounded at the notion that his input or others would receive a hostile reaction into submissions for the forth coming Annual General Meeting of Cycling Ireland. He certainly feels that democracy is slowly ebbing away.
CYCLING IRELAND AGM MOTIONS
Motions for AGM 2009
1 That cycling Ireland should set up ‘ A finish line Technology Working group’ with responsibility for investigating the use of technology in cycle races e.g. radio frequency chips in Rider Numbers and finish line technology to read these chips. The working group should have responsibility for investigating this in 2010 with a view to implementing something in 2011. Doing this would help greatly with both Grading and awarding prizes at finishes. You would be able to award more points at race finishes and not just the top 3 to 6 placed or unplaced etc. (Recommendation)
2 That the Road Commission replaces the current Classic League with a new country wide season long Order of Merit, based on all open events in the Cycling Ireland Road Events Calendar.
3 That in compiling the annual Cycling Ireland Calendar, clubs who are willing to apply for race dates and who do not intend running underage races should not be discriminated against in the allocation of race dates (Recommendation)
4 That Clubs who do not apply to promote an open race on the annual CI calendar, should offer to provide Marshalls/Stewards (Min 2) to adjacent clubs who may be running an event, offer failure should result in the doubling of affiliation fees and these fees would be allocated to promoting clubs in the area… (Recommendation)
5 That an agreed fee should be included in the application for Open races on the CI calendar and this fee should go into a CI fund to be allocated towards Commissaire expenses which would be allocated by CI Admin on the receipt of Commissaire report forms. (Recommendation)
6 That Cycling Ireland Admin be responsible for notifying Commissaires of their appointment (Recommendation)
7 That all Regional Commissaire appointments be submitted to Cycling Ireland Admin for publication.(Recommendation)
8 That One Day Licences as they are administered should be abolished. (Recommendation)
9 That One Day Licences should be replaced by One Day Licence Vouchers in a similar design to be administered by Cycling Ireland Admin. A cyclist could apply to Cycling Ireland Admin for a book (Min 5) of vouchers for €50. When a cyclist wishes to enter a race, they would then submit a completed voucher to the relevant Commissaire who will then submit it with their Comms Report. Unused vouchers can be returned to CI for refund or re- allocation the following season.

BMX OPEN DAY IN MAYO
Just when you thought that the track cyclists were becoming a force! Along comes BMX. Incidentally back in the 80's under the guidance of Liam King the first president of the now Cycling Ireland was the back bone of that sport. The first track was in Balbriggan, but with the advent of computer games, the sport went into decline.
But now the mother the Union Cyliste Internationale are the big motivators behind the resurgence of the sport. And, Western Lakes in Ballinrobe are playing their part. Tomorrow, they have an BMX OPEN DAY.
Western Lakes CC will hold round 2 of the BMX League tomorrow at 11am sharp, the league is open to all categories from adult right through to U8’s.
A variety of races and jump and skill competitions will take place during the day.
We hope to have some of the best BMX riders in the country in attendance.
The BMX track is situated at the cycling centre on the Kilmaine road out of Ballinrobe Co Mayo.

CYCLISTS TAKING UP RUNNING
Aidan Duff certainly caused a stir last week amongst readers of www.irishcycling.com. It took their breath way that Aidan who is deeply involved with cycling since he was knee high would be taking on a task of running the 30th edition of the Adidas/Lifestyle Dublin City marathon.
Well, I have news for you he will unknownst to him be one of the many cyclists in 12,500 participants. Speaking with Ger Madden formerly of the Obelisk Wheelers a couple of days ago. "Aidan will not be on his own in the crowd. Quiet a number of former cyclists will be doing their bit on Bank Holiday Monday to swell the coffers of the many of the charities that will benefit on account of the Marathon.
"I could keep you here on Merrion Row listing the guys and gals from the cycling world who'll be in the mix. "Here's one for you, Ken Norgrove of the Dublin Wheelers has run a competitive marathon in 2 hours 38 minutes. That's some thing for you to chew on.
"Last year Cycling Ireland had a meeting in the Conrad Hotel in Dublin with a view to attracting other sports people to transfer to cycling.
"For my tuppence worth if some of the cyclists transferred their allegiance to athletics. They would be representing Ireland in the stadia of thew world," said Ger. When I pressed him for the time he would cover the course in on Monday, he was as modest as the day is long.

Talking of the marathon, I picked up this piece of information from Detroit home of the motor car!
A bizarre tragedy struck the Detroit Marathon on Sunday when three men died within 16 minutes.
Daniel Langdon, 36, collapsed at 9.02am local time, between the 11- and 12-mile markers. Rick Brown, 65, fell in the same area at 9.17am, and a minute later 26-year-old Jon Fenlon collapsed just after finishing the half-marathon. Race organisers said emergency personnel reached the men quickly, while weather conditions were cool and well-suited to running.
Fatalities among marathon runners are comparatively rare, with a risk of approximately one in 100,000. Over 19,000 took part in the Detroit marathon and half marathon. "On a day when so many people bring such energy and challenge themselves to do their utmost, this news is very difficult to hear," said Paul Anger, editor of the Detroit Free Press which sponsors the event.
