IrishCycling.com is shocked and deeply saddened with the news of the tragic passing of junior rider Shane O'Brien who died while out training on Tuesday morning.

Yesterday morning I read an article that a cyclist died after colliding with a truck near Lismore in Waterford, no name, with little details, later I was informed that the cyclist was Shane O'Brien, the younger brother Professional Irish cyclist Liam O'Brien riding with the Lidl Trek Racing Future team.

Young Shane was one Ireland top junior cyclists, he represented Ireland recently in the 'Course de la Paix' in the Czech Republic. He was selected to ride the Junior Tour of Ireland in three weeks time on the Irish National Team.

This is heart-breaking news for the cycling community, words fail me now. I extend my deepest condolences to all his family, teammates and friends.

Excerpt from the local news

The club said: "Shane was following his dream to become a professional cyclist and his dedication to this goal has been evident for everyone to see.

"Shane's loss will be deeply felt throughout our club and the wider cycling community.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Shane's family, friends, teammates, and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time."
