This week we lost another cycling great, Peter Doyle a gentleman and cycling legend from the 60's and 70's. He was a double Olympian, a Ras winner and a winner of the 'King of the Mountains' and 'Points' in the Milk Race (Tour of Britain), double winner of the Tour of Ireland and twice winner of the Road Race championships.

Peter Doyle RIP
Peter was one of Ireland's best cyclists over 50 years ago, he was a member of the famous Bray Wheelers when they were one of the top cycling teams in the country. He was super talented, and his results speak for themselves.

While Peter retired from cycle racing just before I took up the sport, I heard of his many remarkable achievements from my fellow cyclists, I looked at him as a real hero. Like Shay Elliott before him, he showed that Irish riders could mix it with the best in the world and this was followed shortly after by the successes of Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche.

I had the pleasure of meeting my hero, when I was a mechanic for the Irish team in the 1983 Milk Race, Peter was the team manager. Well it was an honour to work with him for the two week event. He was an incredible guy, although very modest he had a great tactical head and it was great to see him help our team riders through the event.

I would like to extend my condolences to Peter's family, his close friends and to the 'old Bray Wheelers' for their loss.

May he 'Rest in Peace'
