Cycling Ireland - Survey of Racing License Holders Conducted - Next Steps

Earlier this year Cycling Ireland sent a survey to over 5,700 members holding Full and Limited Competition Licenses. The survey was conducted in response to the declining numbers in racing, despite the high number of license holders, and to ascertain the reasons behind the drop. Finally the survey sought to gain insight into what might help bring some new riders to racing, as well as have riders that have stepped away make a return.

The survey was returned by 637 individuals, with 93% of respondents classing themselves as male and 7% female. Two individuals ticked ‘prefer not to say’. This overwhelming gender imbalance is another aspect of racing in Ireland this seeks to amend.

Following initial internal analysis within the organisation a meeting was held between Cycling Ireland and provincial representatives. Several ideas for promoting participation in 2027 were put forward during this meeting, which the provincial representatives are now in the process of discussing with local event organisers.

A beginner’s race series has been proposed for 2027, allowing C3 riders with 0 points along with Limited Competition license holders get a taste for racing. This series would see four races per province held across the year, aimed directly at riders who have very little or no race experience on the roads.

A revised, more collaborative calendar will be looked at for 2027, with calendar coordinators and race organisers working together to avoid clashes. The revised calendar may also see six races, Classics, take place across Ireland receiving heightened support from Cycling Ireland, replacing the current National Single Grade Event system.

For 2028 it’s been proposed a greater focus on developing Masters and standalone category racing, as well as provincial Gran Fondo style events. These Gran Fondo style events will, in theory, be one per province across the year.

In the coming weeks, along with the cooperation of the provinces, calendar coordinators and race organisers, an initial calendar will be put together featuring all major Championships, Classics and major Stage Races, with a more detailed calendar to be released in December.

Following the ongoing conversation with the provinces and coordinators, more details on the plans to increase numbers in racing over the next two years will be released in due course.
