Exciting Changes Announced for Gorey 3 Day
Cycling Ireland is pleased to support the 2026 renewal of the Gorey 3 Day International Bike Race, which will take place at Easter.
The organising committee have announced a number of changes to strengthen the race, widen participation, and protect the long-term future of one of Ireland’s longest-running stage races.
Rider eligible to enter the 2026 race will now include Senior C2 and C3 riders, all Junior riders and Masters categories: M40, M50 and M60.
This is a significant update from recent years and is aimed at encouraging strong numbers across the board while keeping the standard, pace and tradition of the race intact.
Speaking about the changes, race organisers said: “The Gorey has always been about opportunity – for young riders to test themselves, for experienced riders to measure themselves, and for clubs to race a true stage race.”
“By opening the door to C2, C3, Juniors and Masters (M40 / M50 / M60) we’re protecting that spirit and making sure we see a full, competitive field on the roads again at Easter 2026.”
Plans are underway to include a standalone women’s race to run over the same weekend. The proposed format is three stages over two days.
Gorey 3 Day has and continues to be a firm favourite in the calendar with famous past winners including Sean Kelly, Dan Martin and Mark Scanlon. The two reigning champions of both the women’s and men’s additions, Marine Lenehan and Conor Murphy, are now pro riders.
Further details on route, entry, and scheduling for the women’s race will follow once finalised, but the intention is clear: the Gorey weekend will become a platform for both male and female riders to race proper stages in front of proper crowds.
Work is already underway on stages, logistics, accommodation coordination, and volunteer planning. Full technical details including routes, stage profiles, sign-on information and entry process will be released in the coming months.
For media, team managers, clubs or riders wishing to register early interest, please contact the organising committee.

Cycling Ireland is proud to announce that two athletes have been shortlisted across three categories as well as Cycling Ireland being shortlisted for High Performance Programme of the Year.
Ben Healy has been nominated in two categories. Not only has Healy been nominated as Male Athlete of the Year, sponsored by Allianz, following a tremendous season which recently culminated in a World Championship medal, his stint in the coveted Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France has also earned him a nomination for Sporting Moment of the Year, sponsored by Fiat.
Following her exceptional success at the UCI Track World Championships in Chile, combined with another strong season on the road, Lara Gillespie is shortlisted for Female Athlete of the Year, sponsored by Allianz.
As an organisation Cycling Ireland has been shortlisted for High Performance Programme of the Year, sponsored by Deloitte. 2025 has seen Irish riders take ten medals at World and European levels, across road, track and mountain bike disciplines. Aoife O'Brien Announced as LA28 Scholar
|
The funding, provided through the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity Programme, and supported by Team Ireland’s commercial programme, is designed to assist athletes targeting Olympic qualification. Each recipient will receive up to €26,500 over the four-year cycle, paid in three instalments annually, to help cover costs such as travel, training, accommodation, coaching, and medical insurance. The teams will each receive a total of $50,000 to support them in the qualification journey to LA.
Aoife O'Brien, hot off the heels of her debut UCI Track World Championships at the senior level, was today announced as one of the recipients. O'Brien, currently racing with UCI Continental team DAS-Hutchinson, has become a stalwart of the Irish track team over the last 18 months, riding in green at World and European Championships among other international events, and took a podium place in the Omnium at the Hyerres GP in France earlier this year.
Speaking at the announcement, Chief Executive Officer of the Olympic Federation of Ireland, Peter Sherrard, said, “We are delighted to back the potential of these young athletes and to support them on their qualification pathway to Los Angeles 2028. Thanks to the support of our commercial partners and Olympic Solidarity funding, we have been able to invest over €2.5m in grants to athletes and sports during the past two cycles, while at the same time providing over €4m to support Games costs, playing our part in contributing meaningfully to the system-wide support of Sport Ireland to assist our member sports. I wish the athletes and their sport programmes every success on an exciting journey ahead”
Team Ireland Chef de Mission for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Gavin Noble, said, “These scholarships make a real difference in the journey to the Olympic Games. They provide crucial support to athletes who are balancing full-time training, competition, and financial pressures. It’s great to see such a strong mix of emerging and established athletes, all with genuine potential to perform at the highest level in Los Angeles.”
