Martin Munroe will aim for a strong showing in the junior world time trial championships in Oberwart, Austria, today. While he had a disappointing showing in the track pursuit earlier in the week, he’ll be hoping to bounce back and ride well in the mainly flat 21 kilometre race against the clock.
Munroe has taken time trial victories in the Tour de Paco and in the prologue of the M. Donnelly Junior Tour of Ireland this year. He begins his time trial at 1.58.30 CEST.
The Irish team’s campaign finishes on Sunday when Ciaran Cassidy, Ciaran Kelly, Maurice O'Brien and Sean Rock will compete in the road race championships, slugging it out over nine laps of a lumpy 14 kilometre circuit.
Kelly was in excellent shape earlier this season, taking several good international wins. However he had a drop in form due to the highly-intensive training and racing programme he underwent while staying at the UCI World Cycling Centre this spring. If he can get back to the highs of March and April he has a strong chance of a high finish.
O’Brien, Cassidy and Rock have all shown promising form this year and they too will begin the 126 kilometre event determined to ride well.
