David McCann continues to ride strongly in the Tour of Taiwan, sitting an excellent third in the general classification after four days of racing. The Giant Kenda rider had started the day second overall after his runner-up slot on yesterday’s uphill finish at Linshanbi. He was three seconds behind stage winner Mehdi Sohrabi (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) there, and ended the day seven seconds behind the Iranian in the GC.

McCann remains at the same deficit to Sohrabi this evening, but both were overtaken in the overall standings today by the solo winner Markus Eibegger (Tabriz Petrochemical Team). He soloed to victory in Cihu, hitting the line 21 seconds clear of the next rider, Rhys Pollock (Drapac). McCann and Sohrabi finished in the peloton, one minute and 21 seconds back.

The Irishman won the race last year and is very much in the fight again this time round. He is now 19 seconds off the race lead.

Earlier, he got his campaign underway with a 22nd place in Saturday’s prologue in Taipei, covering the two kilometre course nine seconds off the winning time of Adam Phelan (Drapac). He was then 23rd in the criterium on stage one, finishing in a main bunch led home by Sung Baek Park (Korea).

Fellow Irishman and team-mate Ryan Sherlock is also competing in the 2.2 event. The neo-pro is riding in support of McCann and is 68th overall after four days of racing.

Tomorrow's stage will start at Hsinchu City and ends in Sun Moon Lake. It covers 192.5 kilometres and is regarded by some as the toughest leg of this year’s race. McCann’s prospects for the overall classification will depend on how he fares.
