Team Pezula capped off a strong campaign in the Tour de Beauce in Canada when its riders took top ten placings on the final three stages. After placing eleventh behind the victor Svein Tuft (Symmetrics) on Friday morning’s 20 kilometre time trial at St. Georges, David O’Loughlin was seventh in the 60 kilometre criterium held that afternoon. He was arguably the strongest rider in a break that got clear early on, but confusion caused when the break lapped the bunch meant that those in the escape were not given a bell to signify the final lap.
Evan Elken (Jittery Joe's) escaped and soloed to victory, with O’Loughlin and the other riders in the move finishing seven seconds back. "O'Loughlin was the fastest in the group, I am sure of that," said Dominique Perras (Eva Devinci) to reporters after the race. "I am not a great sprinter but I can hold a wheel. I was hoping to mark him but I guess he was confused too."
Ciarán Power was next best of the Pezula riders, placing 17th on the stage.
Saturday’s penultimate leg was a tough race on the Circuit Urbain Saint Georges. Andreas Schillinger (Team Sparkasse) beat team-mate and breakaway companion to the line, while Pezula’s Australian rider Cameron Jennings (Pezula Racing) took fifth place. Power was best of the Irish riders in 70th.
The 2.2-ranked event concluded on Sunday with a circuit race in Qubéc. Power was one of several riders who was clear in a long-range break and picked up two intermediate sprints en route to fourth place at the finish. Matt Wilson (Team Type 1) was first to the line, taking the victory eleven seconds ahead of the Irishman. Jennings was 26th with Derek Burke 41st; O’Loughlin and Martyn Irvine were both listed as non-finishers.
The final overall victory went to Svein Tuft (Symmetrics), who beat closest challenger Bernardo Colex Tepoz (Tecos Trek Uag) by seven seconds. Jennings was best of the Pezula riders in 21st, 5 minutes and 28 seconds back. Power and Burke were 51st and 76th. They were also seventh and sixteenth in the sprints and mountains competitions, respectively.
