Earlier this month David McCann won the Tour of Indonesia, a nine day, 2.2 ranked event. The Giant Asia rider showed excellent consistency throughout, ending the race a comfortable 2 minutes and 45 seconds ahead of Vyacheslav Dyadichkin (Polygon Sweet Nice). Compatriots Stephen Gallagher and Paul Griffin were second and eighth on stages, respectively, with Griffin taking fifth overall. The Kerry rider was 5 minutes and 16 seconds back.
The Giant Asia team finished clear leaders in the team classification, beating second-placed Polygon Sweet Nice by 19 minutes and 14 seconds. McCann was fifth in the mountains classification and Griffin eighth, while Gallagher, McCann and Griffin were 8th, 9th and 13th in the points ranking.
Griffin was best placed on day one, finished 13th in the bunch sprint which concluded the Jakarta Criterium. McCann took tenth the following day, crossing the line in the same time as winner Sergey Kudentsov (Greenfield Fresh Milk Team). He then continued his strong ride by taking fourth on stage three, with Griffin 13th.
McCann was fourth again on stage four, two places ahead of Griffin. Both finished 38 seconds behind the leading duo Shinichi Fukushima (Japan National Cycling Team) and Jimes Sprage (Bintang Kranggan Cycling Club).
The following day Gallagher went close to a stage win, finishing in the same time as winner Jacob Nielsen of the BACP Team. Griffin and McCann both came home in the group sprinting for fourth, 4 minutes and 54 seconds back. McCann was now second overall, just 55 seconds behind Fukushima, and made the jump into the race lead when he placed third behind Ulzii-Orshikh Jamsran (Greenfield Fresh Milk Team) and Makoto Iijima (Japan National Cycling Team) on stage six. Griffin was eighth.
McCann was himself eighth the following day, 2 minutes and 3 seconds behind the winner Fatahilah Abdulllah (Bintang Kranggan Cycling Club), while both Griffin and Gallagher finished 14 seconds further back in the main bunch sprinting for tenth.
A big sprint settled the penultimate stage, a 112 kilometre leg from Jember to Banyuwangi. McCann and Griffin were 21st and 22nd. The Irish national champion then wrapped up an excellent overall victory when he and Griffin came home in the main bunch on the final day of racing.
The points gained in the 2.2 ranked event meant that McCann moved up two places to a notable fourth place in the UCI Asia Tour rankings, as released on the 25th of September. He has 228 points, as compared to his Giant Asia team-mate Ghader Mizbani, who is leading with 434.32 points.
Gallagher is 38th and Griffin is 118th. The Giant Asia racing team is a long way ahead of the rest of the field, amassing 1379.64 points as compared to Skil-Shimano’s 397.
