RACE DETAILS (press release)
Wales Dudley's Junior Tour of Wales
Saturday 28 - Monday 30 August
World track champion Geraint Thomas leads the Wales A team in the Dudleys Junior Tour of Wales which looks like being a real cracker with this years British Champion Daniel Martin, 4th in last years Tour, looking to thwart a home victory. Thomas missed the British Championship as he was been picked to ride the world track championships in Los Angeles. This is the first time the Junior Tour has had a World Champion on the start line. Geraint is no slouch on the road either, in fact he won the Junior Paris- Roubaix against top continental opposition and then came home to be the first junior to win the Senior Welsh Championship and followed this by winning one of the toughest senior races on the British calendar, the Five Valleys Road Race run by Port Talbot Wheelers.
However its going to be far from a two horse race with a strong Irish contingent looking to swap a green jersey for yellow to make up for the near misses of the last two years and get revenge for not winning their own Junior Tour at the beginning of the month. England field 10 teams with the top riders in the Renolds – Michelin National series entered to try their hand (or legs!! ) in the only stage race in the series. The final stage alone is harder than most of those single day races. Scotland are an unknown quantity at the moment but will be looking to keep their winning streak going after 3 wins in a row.
Again Theo Hartog the effervescent Dutch coach reckons he has the strongest team ever over the 5 years he has supported the Tour, and why is Mbazzi Tadeo coming all the way from Uganda if he has not got designs on winning!! Hopefully he can get over visa problems this year to make it to the race. The routes are very similar to 2003 starting on Saturday 28th August with the usual Time Trial from Brynmawr to the top of the Tumble (Keepers) near Blaenavon a distance of 10 km. which the best riders do in around 12 minutes. Back to Brynmawr Square for the second stage which is preceded by a local group to liven it up for the Mayor Lyndon Moore to start the race at 3.00pm for the 60 mile loop out to Brecon and back.
Sunday mornings 50 mile stage is fairly flat after Hafoyrynys to Raglan and Abergavenny but all that changes when the 80 riders get back to Gilwern to tackle the 3 mile climb to Brynmawr and then on up to the Racehorse Inn on the Blaenavon Road. Small circuits can be the hardest form of bike racing and the circuit at Bryn Bach is the toughest in Britain . The racing is eye-balls out from the gun and with the rise and fall of over 30 metres on each 3 kilometre lap for over an hour it will make the riders dig deep to stay in contention The descent on the western end of the circuit is at speeds of around 50mph. The stage starts at 4.00pm. for 1 hour.
The 60 miles stage 5 starts at Bryn Bach at 10.30 on Monday 30th and is the show piece of the weekend as it runs along the A465 to Hirwaun before swinging north over the beautiful or forbidding (depending on the weather) terrain of the Brecon Beacons. From Storey Arms the route runs almost all on a downhill glide through Crickhowell and Abergavenny before climbing the notorious Tumble (Keepers) mountain , 3 miles of torture or exhilaration for the riders depending whether they are winning or losing for this final climb usually decides the winner!!
The Prize Presentation takes at the headquarters for the weekend Nantyglo Leisure Centre at 2.30. The event is sponsored by Dudleys shopfitters,Risca and Blaenau Gwent Borough Council With additional assistance from Mazda cars, Irwin Wright Dentistry, Newport, Racehorse Inn and Doleq Carpets Brynmawr, Martyn Ashfield Cycles, Bush Healthcare, Aberaman and numerous supporters throughout the British Isles
