Ryan Mullen Takes 36th in the ITT
|
The current TT National Champion finished the 39km course in a time of 48 minutes and 41 seconds, three minutes behind Belgian winner Remco Evenepoel.
Speaking afterwards, Mullen said: “I did everything I could today. I had my pacing plan, I had my strategy. I had my plan and I stuck to it. I gave every ounce of energy out of my body today. The result isn’t as high up as I’d have liked to be honest, but I physically couldn’t do any more. There’s some satisfaction knowing you got it all out, and it’s just full focus on next week now.”
He reiterated “it’s all about keeping the engine going with a few days training before the road race and get it primed for helping Ben on Sunday.”
This World Championships marks Mullen’s ninth in Irish colours, with the NSN rider in action again next Sunday in the Elite Men’s Road Race with team-mates Ben Healy, Darren Rafferty and Jamie Meehan.

Adam Rafferty has today taken a top-10 in the Men’s U23 Individual Time Trial event at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada.
The Hagens Berman Jayco rider took bronze at last year’s European Championships in France in the same event
The Co. Down native finished the 31.3km course 56 seconds behind winner Ryan Gal of the Netherlands.
Rafferty reflected on his race afterwards; “Bit of a disappointing result to be honest, but that’s sport. Just looking forward to the road race now.”
Reigning national road race champion Seth Dunwoody, who added a European Track Championship title to his own tally earlier this year, took 56th place. The Bahrain Victorious rider had a crash early on in the race resulting in time lost and a bike change.

Five Irish Riders in Action today UCI Road World Championships
The fifth day of racing at this year’s UCI Road World Championships saw five Irish riders in action.
Four riders took to the start for the U23 Men’s Road Race. Seth Dunwoody, Liam O’Brien, Adam Rafferty and David Gaffney got to the front of the main bunch and controlled the pace for several laps, looking to chase down the early breakaway.
After a monumental effort on the front Seth Dunwoody pulled the pin and abandoned at the 90km mark. The three remaining riders drove on chasing the breakaway but ultimately Rafferty took 60th, O’Brien 84th and Gaffney 90th.
Dunwoody reflected afterwards: “Super glad to be here. We rode pretty ballsy, and I was glad we were able to ride as a team. We were productive in the race, even though we’re obviously not happy with the way it unfolded. I guess had we pulled it off we would have been class, but now that it didn’t we don’t look great but honestly we go out with our heads held high.”
O’Brien added afterwards: “Feeling pretty empty and knackered. It was always going to be a hard day and we expected it. Unfortunately we just didn’t have it in the end, just ran out of gas to be honest. It’s been a super enjoyable experience and it’s nice to be here with such a good bunch of lads. I’m happy with how we took on the race, just in the end it wasn’t good enough.”

Jamie Meehan went in the early breakaway, less than 10km into the 273km race, and pulled out a lead of over 8 minutes with 16 other riders. With 175km to go Healy and Ryan Mullen moved to the front of the main group before the race entered the smaller, punchy circuit, and after a 100km of graft Mullen abandoned.
Meehan’s breakaway was pulled back with just over 100km to go, but with just over 90km left another break went with Healy in the mix. That move was pulled back before another group went away, leaving Healy with work to do to bridge across.
The battle of attrition persisted, whittling down the group, before an attack from eventual winner Brandon McNulty stuck. Healy tried to bridge across but ultimately finished 10th with the group shattering on the final drag to the line.
Healy said afterwards: “Gave it everything. The lads were great for me out there today and left it out on the road, something we can really be proud of.” He added: “I wanted to get out ahead of the big guns you know, and I feel like I’ve good legs at the moment. Maybe I went too early on reflection but you know, like I said, left it all out there for a similar move that might have been the one that stuck.”
