The streets of Dublin Docklands are set to come alive this Sunday, May 17th, as the Cycling Ireland National Senior Criterium Championships return city centre racing to the capital for the first time in 16 years. A total of 48 riders will line out for the Open National Championship, alongside 25 riders in the Women’s Championship, on a fast and technical 1km circuit centred around Sir John Rogerson’s Quay and Grand Canal Dock.

Once a regular feature of Dublin life through events such as the Kellogg’s City Centre Criterium and Nissan International Cycling Classic, city centre racing has become increasingly rare over the last two decades. The Docklands itself last hosted a race start in 2008, when the Tour of Ireland welcomed the likes of Mark Cavendish, Alexander Kristoff and Bernhard Eisel to Dublin’s roads. More recently, the Giro d’Italia passed within metres of this year’s circuit during the 2014 Grand Partenza.

The women’s race features one of the strongest domestic fields assembled in recent years. Reigning champion Aine Doherty returns in the colours of Dan Morrissey Cycling Team aiming to become only the second rider to successfully defend the women’s criterium title since the championship was introduced in 2017. Also taking to the start line are Olympian Annalise Murphy, Paralympian Linda Kelly and a host of Ireland’s top domestic riders.

The Open Championship is equally stacked, with Conn McDunphy returning from racing in the USA fresh off victory in the Shay Elliott Memorial Race at the weekend. Former National Criterium Champion Conor Murnane also returns to racing for the Dublin fixture, while John Buller will be looking to reclaim the jersey he previously won in 2022 and 2023.

Similarly, five teams are eligible for the coveted Open team classification. The current Open National Road Race Team Champions UCD Cycling Club arrive as strong contenders, while the youthful Velo Performance Cycling Team squad come into the race fresh from stage success at Rás Mumhan. Local favourites Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club will also look to make their mark on home roads.

The team competition adds a significant tactical element to the race. On the short, high speed circuit, riders who lose significant ground may be withdrawn by commissaires before the final 10 minutes or laps, making them ineligible to count towards the team standings. Teams must therefore balance aggression with ensuring three riders remain in contention deep into the race.

Alongside the elite racing, the day features a full programme of youth support races as part of the Dublin Bay Cycling Grand Prix, together with a major event village in Grand Canal Square. Activities throughout the day include bike polo demonstrations, flatland BMX displays, roller racing, BMX skills sessions, bike demos and family friendly activities. Exhibitors include Specialized, Decathlon, Scott Sports, Brompton Bicycle, Quoc and many more.

Racing begins from 10:20, with the Women’s National Championship to start at approximately 13:00 and the Open Championship scheduled for 16:20
