The Newry Wheelers Youth races were an exciting affair with a few new faces getting podium places.

The races were all held on a 4km circuit in the rolling drumlins of the Glenn area, just north of Newry city. The short circuit allowed parents and spectators to enjoy plenty of action as the breaks went and were caught and the finish area was a 600m slightly uphill sprint which tested the sprinters all the way to the line. The dry and sunny conditions added to the enjoyment of the event.

The novice race over 1 lap was taken in fine style by Matthew Harty from the host club, just doing enough to hold off Emyvale rider Callum McKenna. Third spot went to a very talented young girl Alannah O'Grady from Newry.

The Under 12 race over 2 laps stayed together until 2 km from the finish when a 3 man break went clear on the hill.
Juiced riders Jake Gray and Conor Boyle looked like they would be able to master a win but a young rider all the way from Cork spoiled the party and led out the sprint from 150metres and held it all the way to the line.

Under 14 Race: Mark Downey again showed his undoubted class with a great sprint finish pushed all the way to the line by the ever improving Craig Crawford.

This pair along with Harry McComb and local star Cathal Clarke broke clear on the 4th lap, quickly opening up a good gap but disaster struck Cathal when his seat pin snapped and he lost contact with the break.

4. Adam Kerr, Ballymena
5. Aaron Swan, TSC

The Under 16 race was missing several of the usual top finishers and this allowed for great racing over the 10 laps. Kyle Cole from Roe Valley took a deserved 1st win of the season after a hard race with a 7 man break getting away on the 7th lap.Covey Wheelers had 4 riders in the break all working hard along with Bann Valley rider Conor McAteer and Daniel Stewart from Ards. Several attacks were made on the last lap by Covey riders but young Cole closed down all the moves and still proved the strongest in the sprint for the chequered flag.

1. Kyle Cole, Roe Valley
2. Chris Kennedy, Covey
3. Jason Prendergast, Covey
4. Daniel Stewart, Ards
5. Conor McAteer, Bann Valley
6. Robert Staunton, Covey.

This proved to be a very enjoyable event with all the riders commenting on the good circuit, plenty of marshalls and a great finish area.
