Cycling Ireland and Sport Ireland have received formal notification that planning approval has been granted for the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre at the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin.

Designs for the new centre include a 250m cycle track, with 12 badminton courts within the infield. Other spaces, including the entrance and café, changing rooms, offices, training facilities and bicycle hire/stores, will sit under the track at ground level.

The velodrome will act as a landmark within the wider Sport Ireland Campus, capable of hosting national and international cycling and badminton events. The building will be multi-functional, with approximately 1,000 permanent seats and 2,500 temporary seats to accommodate events and activities.

Cycling Ireland Interim CEO, Chris Kitchen said: "The news that planning approval has been formally granted for a National Velodrome is a testament to the hard work of many at Sport Ireland, Sport Ireland Campus and Cycling Ireland. We're delighted to move one step closer to the development of a state-of-the-art velodrome on the Sport Ireland Campus that can help bring Irish cycling to the next level."

Sport Ireland CEO, Dr Una May said: “News of the velodrome’s approval is a really exciting start to 2023. We are delighted to see our plans for the Sport Ireland Campus progressing and the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre is an important next step. This will be somewhere for the community and for elite athletes to come together, sharing facilities at a new destination for Sport in Ireland.”

Cycling Ireland Technical Consultant Paul Watson has worked with key stakeholders in the development of the design and plans.

Paul Watson said: "We're delighted to confirm that Sport Ireland have successfully been granted planning approval for the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre. It's something that Sport Ireland and Cycling Ireland have been working towards for a long time, and we can't wait to continue our work with them on the project to deliver a world class velodrome for Irish Cycling."

Further details on the development will be released in due course.
