JB Murphy claims Ireland’s second medal of the Championships

JB Murphy has taken a fantastic bronze medal for Ireland in the Scratch race this evening at the UEC Elite European Track Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland.

In what was a gripping race, Murphy went clear of the bunch riding solo for around 10 laps winning the bronze medal comfortably.

Rui Oliveira of Portugal took top honours followed by Vincent Hoppezak of the Netherlands.

Murphy claims Ireland’s second medal of the Championships adding to the bronze medal won by Mia Griffin, Kelly Murphy, Emily Kay and Alice Sharpe in the Team Pursuit yesterday evening.

The young rider has been in great form at the Championships proving himself worthy of competing at this level. Yesterday, Murphy placed an impressive fifth in the Points race, finishing level on points with the rider in fourth place.

Emily Kay was also in action today competing in the four event Omnium. After the four events, Kay finished in 16th place overall having placed 14th in the Scratch race, 18th in the Tempo race, 15th in the Elimination race and 9th in the Points race.

Individual Pursuit Track National Champion, Kelly Murphy will compete in the Individual Pursuit tomorrow. Along with national medals, Kelly won gold at the Track Nations Cup in St. Petersburg back in July where she broke the National record for the Individual Pursuit.

Mia Griffin will also compete in the Individual Pursuit and will look to build on her performances from the Track Nations Cup where she won bronze in the same event. Alice Sharpe will compete in the Points race while JB Murphy has a busy schedule tomorrow where he will compete in the Omnium, four events across the day.

Bronze Medal for Ireland at the European Track Championships

National Record falls on day two of the competition

Team Ireland’s Women’s Team Pursuit squad has taken a superb bronze medal in the 4km Team Pursuit beating Great Britain in the bronze-medal final at the UEC Elite European Track Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland today.

The quartet of Kelly Murphy, Emily Kay, Mia Griffin and Alice Sharpe have shown great consistency throughout the competition to take a dominant victory over Great Britain in the final. Ireland’s time of 4:21.262 was nearly four seconds quicker than their opponents who covered the 4,000 metre distance in 4:24.904.

In the process of qualifying for the bronze-medal final, the squad set a new National Record. The quartet recorded a time of 4:21.202 over the 4,000 metre distance, beating the previous National Record of 4:21.368 earlier today. Although they finished second best to Italy, they did enough to secure a place in the bronze-medal final.

JB Murphy was also in action today in the final of the Points Race. The young rider put in a brilliant performance, gaining a lap solo during the race and was part of a group that took another lap to finish with a total of 43 points putting him in 5th place. French rider, Benjamin Thomas claimed the gold medal with 81 points ahead of Luri Leitao of Portugal on 61 points and Vlas Shichkin of Russia on 57 points.

The competition continues tomorrow for Team Ireland where Emily Kay will compete in the four event Omnium. Kay was in great form in the Olympic Omnium before a crash derailed her hopes of a top finish.

JB Murphy continues his Championship campaign with the Scratch race tomorrow evening at 6pm.

Live coverage begins at 17:00 each evening on Eurosport.

The Omnium consists of a scratch, tempo, elimination and points race spread throughout the day.
