DAN O'DONAVAN TROPHY

The day belonged to Sean Lacey when he won the Dan O'Donovan Trophy sponsored by McCarthy Insurances in Castehyde, Fermoy yesterday afternoon (Sunday).

The Dan Morrissey/Speedy-Spokes competitor from Tralee made it look easy when he outfoxed Tim O'Regan from the DID/Dunboyne CC to add his already first placings this year. The duo were part of a five man break that went early in the event and due to tenacious riding they were out of sight in no time.

It has to be said that O'Regan was with the Junior Tour in Castlebar doing an excellent job on behalf of the race organisation and may have suffered lack of fitness for the distance.

DANNY O'SHEA MEMORIAL TIME TRIAL

Colm Cassidy has been a regular to the 10 mile time trial event organised by Sorrento CC each year in Kilpeddar, Co. Wicklow today, the TT was re-named the Danny O'Shea Memorial in appreciation of the trojan work that the late Danny carried out not only on behalf of the club but cycling at a national level. There was an increased turnout for the event which was held on a rolling ten mile course.

Colm who has a sports massage business certainly has an envious record in the last number of years. The first three years he was the outright winner, but in the last two years he has been runner up. Obviously the UCD member was glad to see that sequence come to an end. "I am glad that I got that monkey off my back. I like this course and it is great for the club. We have now recorded nine wins and hopefully there is more in the tank. Also, hopefully it will help my sports business," said Colm as he celebrated with his colleagues from UCD who it has to be said are making waves this year.

Whilst the record held by the late Paul Healion stood its ground, the ladies created a new one. Melanie Spath representing Cycleways posted a new record time of 22.37.There was an excellent turnout in the ladies section.
In the Veterans section the club formed by Michael Lawless, South Dublin CC were in the winners enclosure in that section. "I better get on the phone to Mick and tell him of this success," said Cathal as he finished off his lunch in the Grove Inn in Kilpeddar.

County Monaghan Championships
Report c/o Declan McKenna

There was a really good turnout of cyclists for the inaugural county cycling championships on Friday evening. About 35 cyclists competed in the event to determine a cycling champion for Monaghan. The cyclists were divided into two groups. The first group containing veterans and fourth category riders got a five minute time advantage over the second group containing senior 1&2 riders as well as some veterans. The racing began at Albert Berry Motors on the Ballybay road and the route then took the riders towards Ballybay before turning left for Tullycorbet, Ardaghy and back onto the Ballybay road. The course was 15 miles long and there were 2 laps to cover.

The weather was great and conditions were perfect for racing. By the end of the first lap it became clear the first group on the road were not going to be caught. Patrick Mc Kenna forged ahead on the hill top finish to claim victory and he was followed closely by Ciaran Cosgrove and Emyvale's Barry Hughes rode a great race to take the bronze medal. Eve Mc Crystal from Garda Cycling Club was first unplaced lady and Emyvale's Sharron Mc Kenna was second lady to cross the line. Conor Grimes from Armagh's Clann Eireann CC was first unplaced A3 rider. Stephen Cassidy from Emyvale was 1st veteran on the night. The veteran prize goes to the first cyclist who was 40 years old by the first of January this year.

The race was very well supported by cyclists from the Muckno triathlon club, Carrickmacross Cycling club, Clann Eireann CC and the majority of competitors were from the host club Emyvale. The race referee or Commissarie for the night was Mark Kavanagh from Co. Fermanagh. The race and prizes was kindly sponsored by George Mc Carron of George's Cyclosport shop in Emyvale. The winner was presented with a gold medal and a County Champion cycling jersey and cycling helmet. Silver medal was given to the second place rider Ciaran Cosgrove of Carrickmacross and bronze went to Barry Hughes of Emyvale.

Emyvale CC wish to thank George for his generosity, Tommy Martin for access to his fuel yard for sign on and presentations, all marshalls and club members who helped on the night and fitness habit gym for the use of showers afterwards.
