MAYO CYCLING LEAGUE FINAL

Covey Westport's CC Keith O'Connell staged a magnificent comeback by winning the Mayo Cycling League in the final race in Ballinrobe on Thursday evening. Keith was on third place going into the final round. His solid performance throughout the league and a much improved time trial where he bettered his first TT result. This proved a bonus for O'Connell as he leaped fogged into the lead ahead of Barry Holian and Ger Corcoran for the 'Marrey Bikes' yellow jersey as overall league winner.

The final round was a 15k time trial from Ballinrobe to Kilmaine an and home course. On the night Padraig Marrey Western Lakes CC proved fastest with a winning advantage of 30 seconds. Dave Mac Dermott also of Western Lakes posted a great TT plus an improved time triallist.

The eMayo Leaguef format included eight stages including two Hill Climbs, two Time Trials and four Road Races. In the spirit of good competition six stages were handicapped. In the first two stages however, points were scored based on the fastest times in the 5k Hill Climb on Lallyfs Mountain in Tourmakeady and a 15k Individual Time Trial in Ballinrobe.

In the road race stages there were four groups with the first group getting up to fifteen minutes of a head start on the scratch group over 60km route. Both the final Hill Climb and Time Trial had points for the fastest result on the night and bonus points for most improved in the final two stages. The leaders yellow jersey changed hands on five times occasions.

One hundred cyclists from seven Mayo clubs took part in the eight rounds which were spread around the county.

Sliabh Luachra Time Trial in Castleisland promoted by Currow CC June 16th 2012

High crosswinds made for a difficult but enjoyable and well run Sliab h Luachra TT in Cstleisland last evening (Saturday). Mike Lucey the Killarney native riding for Iverk Carrick Wheelers recorded the fastest time on the night. A good crowd followed the exploits of the competitors for the race of truth with no hiding places to be found on the main Tralee road from Castleisland and back. The times for the catagories were very close and competitive which has added some spice to the event which will hopefully become an annual event. Currow Cycling Club were very pleased with the turnout and thanked the competitors and prize winners.
