BRAY WHEELERS' PROMOTIONS, (Saturday 9th June)
Roundwood, Co. Wicklow.

Gael Houreau (VC ECKwersHeim) winning the Christy McManus in Roundwood

The Bray Wheelers CC certainly pulled out all the stops for their three pronged promotion yesterday with a full programme for the underage in the highest village in Ireland, Roundwood. Plus the Roundwood Grand Prix and the centre piece of the promotion the Christy McManus Memorial were on the menu.

Unfortunately, an accident occurred in the final meters of the Roundwood Grand Prix won by David Fitzsimons of the the Murphy Surveyors Apex Builders and Kilcullen CC. This was David's first ever success in an open race and he was a very happy camper with the win. “I have been off the bike for the last number of weeks because of illness, but this was a great tonic today,” as he celebrated with his manager Liam Walker and several of his team mates.

The event was held over five laps of an 11 kilometer circuit in and around Roundwood. Despite many attempts by the 46 competitors and an undulating course with the finish on a long stretch of road which divides the filter beds and the reservoir, it was Fitzsimons who got his wheel in front on a day he'll long remember as his day in the sun.

But unfortunately in the mad dash to the line, a number of cyclists crashed to the ground. Thankfully, the Order of Malta Ambulance crew were on site and treated the injured accordingly with one cyclist brought to hospital as a precautionary measure. He was detained overnight in St. Vincent’s Hospital purely for observation. His injuries were not life threatening according to a spokesperson

The incident in the Roundwood Grand Prix was held up for over an hour as the organisation, Bray Wheelers awaited an ambulance to cover the Christy McManus.

This event was won in fine style by Gael Houreau from the Velo Club Eckwersheim. Gael a French man was also like Fitzsimons having his first ever success. Currently he is in Ireland on a six month apprentice stint based in Athlone. “I have had a number of placings but today was special. Good course, good organisation and also they had good weather, not like the last few days,” said Gael.
It was intended to have seven laps of the 11kms circuit which was used earlier in the day. But because of the unavoidable delay the decision was to reduce it to six laps.

The A3's which included the winner Houreau were give n a two and half minute advantage on the A2's.

But, the A2's literally started on the wrong foot when they failed to follow the course after three kilometers, but they quickly made amends. Further on they encountered two horses on the course which severely hampered their progress. Admittedly despite this inconvenience there were no hysterics with their plight of a safe passage. They to a cyclist remained calm and collective and within a minute they were on their way. But, unfortunately by race end the A3's had maintained a two minute advantage on the first A2 home, John Mason of DID Dunboyne CC.

Fermoy CC were again dominant in the underage section with wins for Eoin Birchall in the Under 12 section. Dion McCarthy also from the Fermoy CC came up trumps in the Under 14's. In the under 16's Sorrento's Fintan Ryan showed the way with a win. Of course Fintan would have had an advantage as he lives in the area, but the previous Saturday on the track he was also in the winners enclosure. As they say 'success breeds success.'

JOHN HOLIAN CUP

Paul O'Connell, the military man and not the rugby giant of Munster out maneuvered his cycling companions in the Holian Cup in the Neale, Co. Mayo on Friday evening.
For a time the organisation were troubled by the weather conditions. Thankfully they held their nerve and the response of 73 competitors was indeed a tonic, with just a windy evening casing little concern.

The event was over 5 laps of 7 miles, with a generous handicap of fourteen minutes between the first and last on the start line. Charles Prendergast Cunga CC fresh from the recent Ras showed he was in form with Thomas Fallon Seven Springs away for a full lap before their escape was ended. But the sting in the tail was that the advantage swung in favour of the limit group who were now in the ascendancy. Up front ex Mayo football selector Kieran Gallagher from Swinford CC and Limerick’s Paul O Connell of Cycle for Sick Children club swung clear..

On the final lap gap, Gallagher and O'Connell were ahead by over two minutes. In a sporting gesture the pair crossed the finishing line arms held aloft in victory, but the camera was called into play with the Limerick man getting the verdict.

Next home was Charles Prendergast who just had that extra zip to get the final podium lace ahead of Galway Bay's Liam Frawley.

PARACYCLING TT IN CORK
C/o Terry O'Neill Blarney Cycling Club

The sun came out on the 34 competitors in Rathpeacon near Blarney today for the Blarney CC and Rebel Wheelers, Invacare time trial for para cycling. 5 hand cycles took to the line with UCI world champion Mark Ronan taking 1st Darrell Erwin 2nd and Declan Slevin 3rd in the H1-H2

Paul Tobin took 1st in the H3-H4. In the C1-C3 Enda Smyth took 1st and Chris Burns in 2nd .

The C4-C5 was taken by Billy Walsh with Jerry Towey 2nd and Dominic Walis.

One of the highlights of the day was Diana White and Blarney man Mick O'Mahony winning in the tandem, with Mick as pilot, Diana took 1st lady tandem, and Mick has found a new calling blasting to a fine 4th best time on the day overall.

The best Time on the day went to the mens tandem pair of John Goldrick and Denis Toomey who covered the 22k in 33-33. 2nd in the tandem was Martin Gordon and Karl Kiely.

The Rebel Wheelers all took to the road over a shorter course and were all cheered home by the crowd on the line. Mark and other members of para cycling Ireland, cycled with the kids to encourage them along.

All the kids were presented medals at the end and a lot of fun was had by all. A big thanks to Jerry O’Regan from the Rebel Wheelers for organising all the kids and I hope they will be inspired by the athletes that took part in the race to take part in the paralympics.

Food and refreshments were put on by the Rebel Wheelers, so a big thank you to all who made cakes and Pauline for the sandwiches and Brian Osborne for the water and coke etc.

The fine weather made the day and the feedback from the riders was that the course was good but the headwind on the way out made it tough. Some had traveled 3hrs to get here today and goes to show the hard work these athletes put in to their sport. A big thanks to them all.

Big thanks to the lads in Blarney CC for marshals, lead car, motorbike time keeping and the man on the mic Danny (the new Ted) Connolly

Big thanks Frank O Leary and Denis Toomey paracycling Ireland, and com for the day Brian Jordan.

We can’t forget the Rathpeacon school, the red cross for the ambulance and the Gardai as we couldn’t run the event without them.
