Paudi O'Brien may have missed out on a gold medal last Friday week in the National Criterium Championships organised by Lakeside Wheelers in Mullingar.

But, last evening in Youghal, Paudi showed true grit and determination to land the top prize, when the Youghal CC had their first open promotion in 18 years.

"I thought after that length of time that the man above could have smiled on us. By all accounts everybody around the country was in the same boat. The main thing to come out of the promotion, was the consensus that Youghal is an ideal location for a crit event. I must say the club members did an excellent job and thanks also goes to all who helped in the promotion, particularly the Gardai. Next year, I'll put in a call to the man above for conditions that would suit all," said Anthony Kenneally.

Runner up in the event was Robin Kelly of Waterford CC and third home was Aidan Crowley. Aidan was full of praise for the organisation, "it is great to see Youghal CC back at the top table. This was a tremendous circuit, worthy of championship.

But, I was keen to win and similar to last week in Mullingar, the bould Paudi went for gold. Whereas last week it was Felix English who blew the opposition away. Fair play to the lads for putting on a bike race," said Aidan as he headed on for Midleton to put his feet up.

The club were happy in getting the race up and running after its 18 year lapse, despite the conditions and are looking forward to next years sun soaked event.
