Ryan Mullen (StenaLine Ireand)
StenaLine Ireland's Ryan Mullen set the bar last evening on the first stage of the Junior Tour of Ireland by posting the fastest time in the 7 kilometer time trial between Ross and knockthomas on the outskirts of Castlebar.

Second last of the 66 starters, Mullen a noted disciplinary against the clock proved to be in his comfort zone by taking the race leadership in a very respectable time of nine minutes twenty seconds on a course perfectly suited to time trialling.

“It is good to get off to a winning start. The course was ideal and the evening was calm with a breeze from the left which caused me no major problem. Also as a junior this is the first occasion that I have worn a yellow jersey as a race leader.. I am happy for the team.,” said Ryan after the presentation in Lough Lannagh Village made jointly by Alice Sherratt and Gary McIlroy..

From seasoned observers of the Junior Tour, the setting of the course was ideal. It was a conventional time trial on road bikes and made for an interesting contest.

Interestingly the team of Mountivation Development from the UK received a message of support from Daniel Martin, now participating in the Tour de France. It certainly spurred on Josh Knights as he rolled in fifth place in the standings.

As for the defending champion Thomas Wrona of Hot Tubes (USA) he could no better than 16th position. According to Toby Stanton their manager, “it is a good start. He did not win the opener on the 'Windy Gap' last year. Need I say more".

Another visitor from the USA Brendan Rhim of K.M.S Cycling Academy was doubly pleased with his third placing. 'That race in Bunclody organised by Slaney CC certainly was a bonus as he finished second.

Todays stage has a start and finish in Westport over 105kms. The stage is sponsored by the Irish Veterans Cycling Association against a back drop of magnificent countryside, which I'm sure will not be be viewed by the participants
