CAMPBELL'S WEEKEND ROUNDUP - Week 33:
By Tommy Campbell

This is a good weekend for the Juniors-Veterans-Ladies and A3's as they have there championships to be decided n Blackrock. Whilst Aidan Reade of Black Rose CC is up against it. The decision to cancel was NEVER on the agenda. Tom Shanahan of Limerick CC 'if you are not in by tomorrow for the 'youth championships' then it is hard cheese. And, Brain Jordan is rarin' to go with the Charleville Two-Day the first weekend in September.

The weekend cannot come quick enough for those seeking All Ireland glory in the various categories of juniors, veterans and A3.

Cuchulainn Cycling Club in the action!

It all starts on Saturday in Blackrock, Co. Louth when the Cuchulainn Cycling Club open there doors to a top class number of events which will be keenly contested.

First off on Saturday will be the TT and on the following day (Sunday), the road race championship will be the order of the day.

All championships are on a pre-entry basis and can be found on for the Saturday events Time Trial (Junior Men & Women and Veterans), 35km Course. First Rider off at 9am.

On Sunday the action switches to the road where the the Juniors and As' will be the focus of attention. The twin events will be contested over 105km (6 laps x 17.5km circuit) with the race finishing in the village of Blackrock.

Sunday, Road Race (Junior Men & Women and A3 Senior Men), 17.5km Circuit x 6 Laps (Route Details). Racing Starts at 12.30pm.

It is widely anticipated that Greg Swinand of the Usher Irish Road Club will do back to back wins in the Veterans Time Trial Championships. But it can bed equally said that Joe Fenlon of the Dan Morrissey-Speedy Spokes can be the force to be reckoned with. Or, can David Peelo of the Murphy Surveyors-Apex Builders-Kilcullen CC spoil the party? All three were concerned in the placings last year. The same may apply on Saturday, but who is to say that will be the outcome.

In the ladies section, I would be more cautious, but Melanie Spath of Cycleways would be the obvious choice. With the upcoming An Post Ras na mBan, the numbers in the championship could be well up and a ding dong battle for the medals will come to the fore!

The Junior ranks as regards the outright winner is a foregone conclusion. Anyone denying the ability of Ryan Mullen of Planet X to lift the title would need to visit his local doctor. It is the search for the runners up could be interesting. Sadly the likes of Danny Bruton of DID-Dunboyne CC would have figured on my radar, but not others in higher places. But, sadly he suffered an injury last weekend in Kilmessan which put paid to his hopes. Of course those that travelled to Holland for coaching and racing are going to have a distinct advantage. And as for those based in the UK, if they travel to the Blackrock venue could have an influence on the destination of the medals.

Also the haul by the UK cyclists in the London Olympic Games could be a poser for Cycling Ireland going forward! The likes of Ciaran Campbell, Liam Corcoran, Sean McKenna, Shaun Rigley and Cian Dwyer will have benefited from the recent International Junior Tour based in Lough Lannagh Holiday Village in Castlebar and any one of them could have a medal on their way home following the championships.

BLACK ROSE CC in the headlines

Little did Black Rose CC know that when he applied for an event on the Cycling Ireland fixture list that he would face serious competition.

But, Black Rose CC has known for a long time that various championships would be the order of the day on the 19th of August.. And in the words of the organiser Aidan Reade, “I had no intention of dropping out!

It's been one heck of a season so far for the Galway based team Black Rose Racing. Next on the agenda is the Grand Prix this Sunday. The race will be on the tried and trusted one that was used last season. When the Angelus bell tolls the competitors will roll out of the East Galway village of Menlough, heading towards Galway for 8km then right to Abbeyknockmoy for 7km, left up Ryehill, a steep 1km climb and down through beautiful Monivea and will complete that loop four times before returning to Menlough, finishing outside Black Rose Recording Studios. Also on the cards is a kids race ( the final 200 meters of the main event course ) and the Champion of Menlough trophy for complete beginners, a 10km race through Menlough.

Such has been the success of the club, a great number of people locally have taken up cycling and a leisure side of the team will be put in place for next year. (You have been waned and put this in your diary for 2013).

The racing side of such a small team has been a great success with Sarah Piner joining over the Winter and setting her goals on the track. It all fell into place in the National Omnium and Keirin when she won Gold in both and joined up with Melisande Michaud for the Team Sprint and picked up a bronze. It was Milly's first season on the track and developed from being one of the slowest in Sundrive to receiving a medal from Olympian Martyn Irvine for most improved rider then picking up a National Medal.

Sara Ortiz the bubbly member of the club has set the bar for others to follow. She has stormed into the Women's Racing scene winning most national events and if not, placing second. Her professionalism and humour has added so much to the team.

On the Men's side for a second year running, we fielded a RAS team with Stuart Cox from Mullingar joining us, Eddie Barry taking time out from baby making duties, Alan Loftus from Limerick and Keith Fox from Shannonside. The driving force of the team has been Eoghan Considine and he continued that drive into the track team joining Stuart and Aidan Reade with Brian O'Donnell for the Team Pursuit. With no provincial track and no specific training and with Eoghan and Brian only accredited the day before, they managed a National Bronze, the same colour Aidan Reade and Brian Martin picked up in the Tandem Champs, missing out on silver by only 1 second.

As Brian said, 'it's enough to change the team name to Bronze Rose.'

Not only has Aidan put together an event but the first prize has to be one of the moist unique in the county if nit in the world. A GLASS GUITAR.

BEWARE of UPCOMING EVENTS and entries

Limerick CC are staging the National Youth Championship and you better believe it!

Entries close tomorrow.

Tom Shanahan of Limerick CC is adamant about the closing date.

There is so much to do and if you are in doubt about the closing date, show up at your peril on the day and you'll be disappointed. They intend using a Tag timing system at the event.

And who knows into the future! As we are all aware it is becoming a paperless society. Maybe next year Cycling Ireland will have a card where you can sign on?

Another item of note is that pre race registration will take place on the Friday evening between 19.00 and 22.00 hours and the following morning from 7.00 to 8.00

Limerick CC intend making this a unique occasion for the youth championship and I have a distinct feeling that he was watching the professionalism of the 'Errigal International Youth Tour' in Churchill and Letterkenny over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

THE CHARLEVILLE TWO-DAY

Entry's are now been taken for The Charleville 2 Day and as they are already coming in fast its important to get them in early. SO DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE.

How it all started:

On Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd September 2012, We are once again running the 12th Annual Charleville 2 Day Cycle race. This race began as a 1 day race in 2000 in Charleville it attracted 60 rider. As I intended to make this race into a two day I was lucky enough to have The Woodland’s House Hotel as main sponsor and was willing to continue with the two day.

For the next seven years the race was held in Adare and the race grew in stature attracting up to 150 riders. Then in 2008 with the opening of The Charleville Park Hotel & Leisure Club, the race returned home with the Hotel as main sponsor. This as it turned out proved a good move as we had to change our routes due to the move; the race became more competitive, which was very favorable with the riders.

Unfortunately for us in 2010 our National governing body Cycling Ireland changed rider categories. This meant that a third of the riders were not allowed to ride our race. But this year we have got around that change and once again we will get our numbers up. This year we will once again be based in Charleville we are sticking with our stage, which have proved successful and popular.

ENTRY’S TO BE RECEIVED BEFORE THE 24TH AUGUST 2012. (Download Entry Form here http://www.irishcycling.com/publish/uploads/2012_charleville_2_day_entry_form.pdf )
