CAMPBELL'S WEEKEND ROUNDUP - Week 27:

Options are a plenty this weekend to be followed by the International Junior Tour of Ireland in Castlebar, Co Mayo next week. Kick off is Youghal and Banbridge tomorrow evening. Plus of course we have underage on the underage circuit at Davidstown on Saturday, courtesy of Slaney CC with Navan/Avonmore CC providing the action in Ballivor on Saturday evening. Sunday has Slaney back in action with a a number of events and a new addition to the programme is the Midleton CTC Grand Prix.

It is obvious that 'criterium' racing is back in vogue. Following on from last Friday night in Mullingar where the Nationals was held. The Lakeside Wheelers complemented the programme with a support event. Irrespective of the weather the crowds were out.

Tomorrow evening should be no different when Youghal CC and Banbridge CC afford the public the opportunity to be up close to the action in their respective towns.

It is a very special evening for the Cork town to welcome back competitive cycling after a lapse of eighteen years. No, that is not a misprint. According to Anthony Kenneally, "The club are looking forward to the promotion and the fact that we have the town closed off for a 1km circuit for the racers. I have no doubt it is going to be exciting," said Anthony.

I caught up last evening with a competitor who did not to be named, "it is a great circuit, one of the best in the country. I remember watching John Brady scorching around the circuit that they are using back in 1985 and I was ten years. It is great that on this weekend that Youghal and Midleton who have been out of the spotlight for a number of years are where they belong."

Sign-on / Registration is in Supervalu carpark at the Start Finish Line from 6.15pm The contact is Anthony Kenneally – 087-8843739 for further details. NB - There is no underage racing on the night.

BANBRIDGE 'CRIT @ THE OUTLET'

Banbridge CC will hold what looks sadly to be the final edition of ‘Crit @ The Outlet’ on Friday evening (06/07/12). With the imminent arrival of Tesco’s at the venue this year’s race was also in doubt but thanks to the management of The Outlet we have secured this excellent venue for one last year.

As has become the norm for Banbridge events, racing will be available for everyone with a series of youth races (U12, 14 & 16’s) kicking the evening off at 6:30pm, followed by an A4 event at 7:30pm and the main event for A1’s, 2’s and 3’s at 8pm. Sign-on for all events will be open from 6pm – please ensure you are signed on at least 15 minutes before your event.

No one day licences will be available for this event. For further details please contact Race Organiser Aaron Wallace (aarwallace@gmail.com / 07713147968).

BALLIVOR GRAND PRIX

The Navan/Avonmore CC will be out of the traps again this Saturday evening with the Ballivor Grand Prix. You can expect a big turnout before the majority of the competitors head for the Leinster Championships the following day.

Polar IceTech Grand Prix

On Sunday the Polar IceTech Grand Prix by Midleton Cycling & Triathlon Club is the biggie in Munster. This is the first race since the club held the 2008 National Championships which was won by Dan Martin.

Donal Clifford of DID/Dunboyne CC will be looking to get back on track after missing on a medal at the recent 'National Criterium Championships' in Mullingar last weekend. Also the expectation is high that Iverek/Carrick Wheelers' John O'Shea could be the real danger.

The club has grown considerably over the last 4 years in line with the increased popularity in cycling across the country and in the last two years now has an active racing section again for the first time in many years and their are usually plenty of green black jerseys to be spotted at A4 events across Munster - including ex-Olympic runner Noel Berkeley and John O'Connell who is now racing A3 and recently raced in the National Elite TT Championships.

The club feel that the holding of the race is the next step is being an active racing club on the Munster scene and hope to make it an annual event. The route for this weekends race uses part of the same course from the 2008 National Champs and involves an 11.4km circuit with the start / finish from Cloyne village, just outside Midleton.

Race HQ / Sign-on: The Rock Tavern Bar, Cloyne. Sign-on Time: 11:00 Race Start: 12:30 Parking & Changing: Cloyne GAA A+/A1/A2: 9 Laps (13km) A3: 7 Laps(80km) A4: 4 Laps (46km) Contact for race details: Tosh Cahill - 087-2073049 or Ken Savage - 086-0513933

RACE 1: 2012 Eddie Tobin Memorial Road Race for A1/A2's incorporating The Leinster Road Race Championships

Sunday, July 8th, will see Slaney CC host the 8th edition of the Eddie Tobin Memorial Road Race . The event has provided great racing over the past seven years with some of Ireland’s top riders taking the honours and good numbers taking part. This years event will also be the Leinster Road Race championships. Eddie was a long time member, rider and administrator of Slaney CC, was a respected member of the FBD Rás team and was heavily involved in the visit of the Tour de France to Enniscorthy in 1998.

RACE 2 : The Noel Redmond Memorial Road Race for A3's1970s

Slaney CC honour the memory of Noel Redmond in the A3 race.
