Martin Irvine wins National Crit Champs Mullingar 2011
Both Lakeside Wheelers and Newry Wheelers are in the spotlight this weekend. What has Stephen Roche and the Newry Three day got in common? Both are celebrating 25 years of activity. Thankfully, the National Criterium Championships is ready to hit the streets of Mullingar and what a bonus for Lakeside Wheelers if Damien Shaw were to be crowned the champion. The IVCA hold their track championships. Damien Long brings the underage racing back to Corkagh Park for a further three Sundays. Entries are been accepted for the Junior Tour which heads back to Castlebar and Lough Lannagh Village.

National Crit Championships in Mullingar Friday night 29th June 2012.

Two weeks ago the Lakeside Wheelers had to postpone the Crit Championships and the rearranged national title event now goes ahead tomorrow evening Martyn Irvine is expected to be back to defend his crown in Mullingar and make it three Crit titles in a row. Martyn is in excellent form judging by his second place in the TT and fourth in the Road Race championships in Clonmel last weekend. Can he round it off with another national title before the Olympics. Damien Shaw of the promoting club Lakeside Wheelers carries the hope and aspirations of Mullingar. Then of course there is Paudi O'Brien of Dan Morrissey/Speedy-Spokes who rode very well in the road race in Clonmel might have a say in matters. Shaw only started bike racing in June two years ago and would love to take the national title in his home town. Whilst O'Brien twelve months ago was not able to live with the frantic pace in the early stages of last years event but he will be the one to watch if it comes to a sprint finish. Felix English is flying over from England and could be the young gun to put it up to them all.

Chatting with the organiser Joe Duffy last evening, “Looking forward to hectic racing here in Mullingar on Friday evening, “ said Joe who not only has to put the finishing touches to the championship, but also the two-day.

A separate Category 3 Support race will start at 7:00pm and it should also be an interesting contest. Online entry is open until midnight Thursday on the Lakeside Wheelers web site www.lakesidewheelers.ie for both the Championship and the A3 Support race.

Mullingar 2 Day

In addition to the Crit Championships the Lakeside Wheelers will have a very busy weekend with their popular Mullingar 2 Day event on Saturday and Sunday. They have four separate races catering for A1/2, A3's, A4's and Ladies. To the best of my knowledge this is the only club in the country who have a separate stage race for the A4's and it proved very popular last year with a maximum field of 80. Indeed the A3' also had the maximum number 80, which left some riders unable to get into the events. The routes this year are new ones on testing rolling roads around Westmeath. Stage 1 is on a 20 mile circuit from Crookedwood to Castlepollard, Coole , Multyfarnham and back to Croodedwood. Stage 2 is a 3km TT on bit of a climb while Stage 3 takes in an 18 mile circuit from Crookedwood through Collinstown into the village of Fore and back via Castlepollard. The ladies and A4 races will have two laps while the A3 will have three laps and the A1/2's four laps.

Race HQ is at Mullingar Rugby Club on the Castlepollard Road just off the N4 motorway. Registration is open from 9:30am Saturday with the A4 and Ladies races starting at 12:00 with their Stage 2 TT at 6:00 Saturday evening. The A3 and A1/2 races start at 2:00 both days with the TT starting at 8:30am on Sunday morning. Last year the Midlands club had a total of 230 entrants over the four events and it looks like it entry will be every bit as big this year. Race director Joe Duffy tells me that both the A4 and A3 races are nearly full and likely to be oversubscribed again, so get your entry in before its too late.

Newry Three Day

The action gets under way in this unique event tomorrow evening. Naturally, when you reached a milestone of 25 years on the road. You look over your shoulder and wonder how it all began. Well, let us look back and say a big thanks to Noel McKinley.

Welcome to the 25th edition of our 3 day cycle race. This year is a big one as it marks the 25th Anniversary of the event. Back in 1987, when stage races were seen to be a rarity for 2nd category riders, Noel McKinley planned, organised and even managed to ride the event often getting changed 5 minutes before the race began.

As with previous years we would hope this year’s event will be safe and enjoyable. As always, we depend on our club members to marshal & drive and without their help the race would not proceed. We would also like to thank the officials who support our event year after year and also the PSNI for their support with motorbikes and traffic control over the 3 days.

It is extremely disappointing to have the field limited to 80 riders this year as the response from clubs to ride the event has been immense and it is not a pleasant job to have to turn away riders who have in the past rode the event. We have had to return over 50 entries this year and hopefully for next year we can get the numbers increased.

For the 25th year this route could be seen as one of the toughest yet and will see a very worthy winner over the weekend. All in all we look forward to some great racing over the 3 days. Here is to another 25 years and may the road be with you.
